Cruel and Unusual: Bush/Cheney's New World Order

"A critical contribution to America's internal, life-or-death debate over foreign and domestic policy."―Booklist
Read a newspaper or catch the news on television and you might get the impression that America's current leadership is "mainstream": perhaps a bit more conservative and in its foreign policy more belligerent than its predecessors, but still a federal authority that functions within America's political traditions. But as Mark Crispin Miller argues here with great clarity and effect, we are in fact living in a state that would appall the Founding Fathers: a state that is neither democratic nor republican, and no more "conservative" than it is liberal. He exposes the Bush Republicans' contempt for democratic practice, their bullying religiosity, their reckless militarism, their apocalyptic views of the economy and the planet, and―above all―their emotional dependence on sheer hatefulness. Abraham Lincoln once observed that, if the United States should ever be subverted, "it will be conquered from within." And that is exactly what has happened.- ISBN-100393326780

- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2004I recommend this book highly. Not only does Mr. Miller catalogue the ways in which Bush/Cheney and cohorts have misled us into the Iraq war (with special emphasis on the right's denigration of Scott Ritter, a former marine and very knowledgeable weapons inspector), but he also chronicles (with supporting quotations and references) Bush's misdeeds, and provides cogent explanations behind the machinations of the Republican party and its right-wing supporters.
These explanations range from projection, as bolstered by the actions of a whole slew of Republican stalwarts (such as Newt Gingrich, Henry Hyde, Michael Savage) in addition to Bush, which were in acute contradistinction to their holier-than-thou rhetoric, to the rise of Christian Reconstructionism and its direct goal of eliminating separation of church and state and therefore subversion of the Constitution.
The most disturbing aspect of his book is that he carefully lays out the case as to how the US media has abrogated one of the fundamental principles upon which this country was founded, namely holding the government accountable for its actions.
Unlike the editorial comment found at the beginning of the reviews presented here, I found the comparison with how the Republicans (and the media) treated President Clinton and how it has treated President Bush very enlightening and the clearest presentation of doublethink I have ever read.
Every thinking American should read this book before November 2, although as Mr. Miller points out, as the electronic voting machines that we are supposed to use have been manufactured by Diebold and American Information Systems, supporters of Bush & Co., it may be a moot point for those of us who will choose to vote against the Republican hegemony since they have been proven to be easily hacked and provide no paper trails for post-voting scrutiny.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2007Simply a great book. I have read so many books about Bush, the Republicans, and the Iraq War that I am thoroughly disgusted with our current national leadership. This book actually put my mind at ease because after reading it I realized that Bush and the conservatives are just liars, hypocrites, and criminals ..... and will ultimatley self-destruct. In fact America is finally seeing Bush for who he really is. His legacy will drag the Republican neo-con movement down for years to come.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2004Miller's book manages to tell - in a clear and concise fashion - how the media have been asleep at the wheel. Rather than investigating and reporting factual information, most media has accepted at face value whatever "leaders" have to say. Press releases become newspaper stories without even cursory fact checking. 'Attitudes' by politicians towards other individuals in newsworthy events, i.e., Scott Ritter as mentioned in the book description above, are mirrored by reporters. And the hard questions are going unanswered. It's almost as though it is more important for the White House Press Corps, as one example, to maintain their comfy seats in the briefing room than it is to tell us the truth behind what any politicians are saying. It reminds me of 'Max Headroom', the talking head parody that was so funny during the Reagan years. The head talks, but the words do not reflect reality.
Finally, in the review already written, I cannot find any reference to the book or what the book or the author have to say. Rather, as is increasingly common, it is simply an entry reflecting bitter personal political feelings and does not serve well to portray the contents of this book. I suggest people read the book themselves, then decide if there is anything to be learned from it!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2015Tough words for George the Younger, but a good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2004The pending 2004 elections are perhaps this country's most high-stakes contest since the Civil War and that era's issue of slavery.
Freely dropping words like 'security' and 'patriot' into his own campaign trail conversations, George W. Bush is in fact presiding over a government racing to ensure the American people and the world are under his control. He only likes people who can be molded into a perpetual/near-perpetual state of fear.
Countless reports (including those from within the government) now openly question the legitimacy of the Iraq invasion. Because Saddam Hussein did not have either the oft-mentioned Weapons of Mass Destruction or ties to Al Quaeda, this military venture has been a ruse to cover the administration's own tail.
In true fascist form however, the president and his stand-ins are insisting that anybody who questions their motives is really trying to undermine security and patriotism. Never mind the ease which Haliburton and other oil industry businesses (with convenient) connections to senior administration officials have secured contracts for `post war' Iraq.
The only reason why Bush distinguishes himself is the insistence on absolute rule at all costs. The American government's checks and balances system was intentionally created to prevent tyranny. If left totally to their own devices, the Bush team WOULD formally scrap the United States Constitution and other documents which have largely prevented the fraud which was rampant throughout other countries.
Even if Mr. Bush does not waffle on issues, his mannerisms pose their own set of problems for good (and certainly safe) government. If the Bush administration felt compelled to lie about their REAL case for invading Iraq and then overthrowing Saddam Hussein, what else are they lying to us about?
Like Joe McCarthy in the 1950's the Bush administration exploits people's fear of an uncertain future for explicitly self-centered ends. If we survive these times, America will look back at this era and wonder why so many otherwise rational people had literally allowed themselves to be brainwashed into a perpetual state of fear/panic by the government.
I find it significant that so many once ardently Bush conservatives are now reduced to talking about the president's passion and single-mind determination---instead of his ethics and honesty. Because these were allegedly BIG sticking points with the Clinton administration, their double standard is very telling of actual priorities.
As long as George W. Bush is given free reign to destroy the world however and whenever he likes, these people do not care that American troops are being wounded and dying for this administration's lies.
