Editorial Reviews

Have you ever dreamt of "sailing off into the sunset?" Then join Bob and Kaye aboard their 36 foot sloop, "Bettie" as they cruise from Los Angeles to the Bahamas via the Panama Canal on the first leg of their sailing adventure. This is a fast-paced documentary with gorgeous photography that will give you a first hand look at the cruising lifestyle.

"Bettie" is based on a Cascade 36 hull. It was custom molded for Bob by Yacht Constructors in Portland Oregon back in 1978. Four years, and lots and lots of man hours later, Bob splashed her. "Bettie" has a raised freeboard that allows for a flush deck design.

Over 10,000 miles have passed under Bettie's keel since Bob and Kaye left Los Angeles in 2004. They sailed down the west coast to Panama, through the Canal, east to Cartagena, Columbia then north to Honduras and east across the Caribbean to the Bahamas. That's the focus of this video.

Next, they cruised north along the eastern U.S. seaboard to Boston. The geese were flying south by October beckoning them back to warmer climes, so they headed south to Guatemala and Honduras.

After refitting and some time back in L.A., Bob and Kaye sailed back across the Caribbean to the Florida Keys. TheSailingChannel is partnering with Bob and Kaye to produce a continuing series of cruising documentaries as we follow "Bettie" to the far corners of the world.

If your idea of fun is shell out your hard earned dollars to watch somebody else's poorly done home movie, then this is for you! This is not a sailing guide nor even a guide to the locales they visit. In fact they often get the names of the places visited wrong - for instance Tobago Island (Panama) instead of Taboga. Or an arrow pointed to someplace in the middle of the Lee Ward islands labeled Cartagena Columbia. Don't waste your money or time on this dog.

Somewhat informative about the liveaboard/cruiser lifestyle. It is worth viewing. I will enjoy wathcing it again. Not a life changer, but gives some nice video of travels from LA to the Bahamas. Some interesting video of the Panama Canal and sailing underway.

This was a fun movie to watch. However, it is basically a home movie of a two year voyage. There is a lot of good scenery but not a lot of footage aboard the yacht, which is what we rented the movie for. I really don't think this should be a paid rental.

I found this to be very jumbled and disjointed. It seemed like the footage sometimes didn't match the narrative. New people appear unannounced and the voyage itself seemed to be missing big sections of coverage. Overall the footage was in good quality but this video falls apart in the editing.

It's only $2, so I'll support a cruiser. BUT - this video (wont call it a movie) was all over the place. one minute their cross the panama canal, the next minute, they're still on the other side, then their back on the caribe... They somehow went from Utila to the Bahamas in a straight shot. I dont mean to knock the video. It was nice. I was just expecting a bit more for something I paid for. This belongs on YouTube, not Amazon. But again - support your fellow cruiser and drop $2.

Great documentary of the real life of a cruising the world on a sailboat. My personal goal is to join the ranks of folks like these sometime in the near future. I watch this film at least once every month or so to keep my inspiration on track.

Whether you are just interested in seeing what the lifestyle looks like, or like me, need something to help keep you focused while you sell your home, your cars, and all your belongings, change your career path to enable you to do such a thing, or many of the other life changes that need to take place, sometimes over several years, in order to make it happen; this film will keep your heart and head on course.

This is a terrific little film about cruising. A great mix of sailing and experiences along the way. It moves along very quickly as they cover 10K miles on the trip. A great peek into what it's like to head out from the West Coast of the U.S. and turn left. My only complaint was that it wasn't longer and it didn't go into more detail about the sailing itself, but overall well worth watching.
