New Hampshire history is uniquely on display along the highways of the Granite State. The New Hampshire roadside historical markers commemorate significant events and individuals from the first settlers arriving in 1623 to notable individuals who helped define what New Hampshire is today. New Hampshire played a major role in the birth of our nation. From Revolutionary battlefields to individuals of political influence, the Granite State has made an indelible mark on history. This book explores the 255 New Hampshire historical markers that dot the state highways and roads. Each marker is described with its location (to include GPS coordinates), date installed, marker inscription, and expanded historical references of this event/individual. Information may also be provided about other points of interest in the vicinity of the historical marker.

About the Author

Michael was born and raised in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. After serving in the U.S. Army for more than 23 years, Michael returned to New Hampshire in 2009. Michael has been a JROTC Army Instructor at White Mountains Regional High School in Whitefield since his military retirement. Michael holds graduate degrees in education; an Educational Specialist (Ed. S) degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Liberty University in Virginia, and a Masters in Education (M.Ed) from Saint Joseph's College in Standish Maine.
Michael resides in the historic mountain community of Bethlehem where he is actively involved in town government. In 2017, Michael wrote and sponsored an historical marker commemorating Frances Glessner Lee, who made significant contributions to the study of criminology and is considered the "Mother of Forensic Science". This marker is proposed to be installed in front of the historic and picturesque Rocks Estate in Bethlehem. Michael recently earned his certification as a New Hampshire Granite State Ambassador and hopes to use his knowledge of New Hampshire to assist guests who visit the Granite State. In his spare time, Michael enjoys hiking in the White Mountains and riding his motorcycle with his wife Kristin along the country roads of New Hampshire.

I guess I have a bias as a native New Hampshirite, I prefer New Hampshireman, but my objective review is quite positive. The author Mike Bruno has provided us a real gem here in New Hampshire in this book, answering questions one might have as a likely passerby of these numerous state historical markers. Better yet, this book provides mtoivation to purposefully seek out the sites opposed to being just a passerby. He has skillfully organized the book into seven regions of the state geographically in individual chapters. A list of the markers within a region prefaces each chapter alphabetically by town. Nothing is left to wonder with each entry providing the name and number of the marker, location, date erected, GPS coordinates, photo of the marker, italicized text as it appears on the marker, and then a page or two of historical facts about the marker. I just got the book today and haven't read it in it's entirety, but I'm certain it will be read through very soon serving as a constatnt reference for quite some time.

People say, “if your friend writes a book, you should buy it.” Well my Good Friend wrote this book and I bought it, but I have to say, if Mike wasn’t my friend, I would buy this book. After living in New Hampshire for seven years and serving with CSM Michael Bruno US Army (Ret) in The Army’s premier Mountain Infantry Unit, I too was amazed at the depth of American history the Granite State held. This book snags you interest immediately on the preface alone. If you’ve never been to New England, read this book before you go and then bring it with you as you discover something about yourself as well. Great job Mike!!

As a native of New Hampshire, one of my favorite pastimes is to jump in my truck and explore the towns of my state. Often times I see the New Hampshire historical markers along the way. Whenever possible, I stop to read and photograph the marker. The author of this book not only tracked down all 255 (at the time) markers, he photographed each one and did further research to add to each story. Each story is so interesting. can't wait to go exploring again with the book in my truck! Have ordered 5 copies as gifts! So much history and so much beauty in NH!
