Sally is in need of some additional cash since her sister moved out of the apartment above her cookie shop and she rents it to her grandmother's friend Allegra for her new candy business. Allegra is anything but friendly, she is grouchy, pushy, she hits on Sally's husband and is dishonest about what kind of shop she is opening upstairs. Is that all that she keeps secrets about? Sally's ovens are being used without permission, some of her signature fortune cookies have been stolen and a lot of things are not adding up. When her father goes up to investigate, he finds that Allegra is running a competing shop and selling the missing fortune cookies as her own. Sally has had enough and she confronts Allegra who gets upset, runs out of the cookie shop into the street, gets hit and killed by a hit & run driver. At first it seems like a tragic accident, but things are not what they seem.

With the help of her best friend, grandmother and her grandmother’s friend (also known as “the thorn in Sally’s side”) the search for the killer takes them on a trip to Las Vegas. Their mission is to track down the estranged daughter of the deceased and find out why she was the only one of her siblings to inherit. Even though it’s a short trip, the author manages to capture the sounds and sights of Sin City while infusing more humor into the story and weaving a tight plot. As the reader turns the pages, the clues start providing more and more suspects which kept me guessing up until the suspenseful reveal. With a strong mystery as the focal point, it’s the characters that add delightful charm to the story and keeps me coming back for each new book in this series!
I was provided an advance copy with the hopes I would review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is a great mystery that involves some unraveling and investigating to find out who wanted Allegro dead. Did Allegro know someone's secret? Was it just out of hate? Look for quirky, eccentric characters and some strange family dynamics filled with envy and greed. This is the first in the series that I have read and I may go back and read some of the others. It sounds like Sally has had some close calls with bodies and murderers. I look forward to the next book where there may be some new family members in Sally's family.
I received a complimentary ARC from the publisher for an honest review. The thoughts and opinions stated are mine only.
