No Reagan, no Gorby; no Gorby, no end to the USSR

This book should be read in tandem with "Reagan's War" by Peter Schweizer - in fact, if they had teamed up to write one book, it would be a stellar, stellar book. Schweizer's book focuses a lot on Reagan's time as SAG President in Hollywood, more so than this one, and Kengor focuses a lot on secret NSDDs and Poland. In fact, Poland is the primary thread that runs through this book, showing up again and again and tying all of Reagan's anti-Communist policies together. The under-the-table aid and the above-the-table rhetoric provided by Reagan and his team is the primary reason that the jewel in the Evil Empire's crown fell away, precipitating the downfall of the USSR as a whole. That and SDI. Kengor's book is, like Schweizer's, a corrective to the liberal trope that Gorby surrendered the USSR and Reagan had little, but mostly nothing, to do with the end of the Cold War. "An amiable dunce," as one detractor famously called him. Kengor writes fairly well, though he is a bit long-winded in places and is not averse to beating a dead horse now and again, introducing a subject, telling us about its impact, then giving a detailed history of the subject, with five examples where three would suffice, then reiterating its impact. Thus the text drags a bit in places. Still an excellent book. The debate between Reagan and Robert Kennedy was an eye-opener, I have only seen snippets of it, and I can't recall reading about it. Ted Kennedy's near treason in the early 1980s left me aghast - not a surprise, but shocking nonetheless. Little details here and there crop up to delight the Reaganaut, and make you long for the days when the CIA had a hand in undermining governments and bringing down our enemies (Cuba, Venezuela, Iran - be glad Reagan is gone).

Paul Kengor's book is an interesting look at the Reagan legacy with regards to foreign policy. While a Reagan booster and fan of the president I think this book goes to far in asserting what Reagan knew about the downfall of the Soviet Union. Underscored in the Kengor's points is one key difference the Reagan often does not get enough credit for which is that Reagan was the first president who believed the Soviet Union could be defeated. To say however that he came in with a plan to destroy the evil empire is a little far fetched. Overall though Kengor's points are well illustrated and he ties together a thematic view of Ronald Reagan upon the lens of foreign policy. I think the reviewer who puts this between David McCullough and Sean Hannity has it in the exact right place for where it falls in the historical spectrum. While they are more detailed book son Reagan (see Richard Reeves) the are also ones that are unabashed praise which is a bad thing regardless of your political persuasion (see D'souza). For those who want to get a quick overview of Reagan's efforts in foreign policy this is a great place to start.

Makes My Top 5 Reagan Books

A must read. An addicting page-turner.

Three things make this book extraordinary: 1) it was written after the declassification of so many vital U.S. documents, 2) it was written by an author willing to dig deep through those documents for what really happened (footnoting all his findings), and 3) it includes deeply researched, pivotal Russian documents of that era. All of the above reveals that Ronald Reagan was a positive fluke of history. (Permit me an off-the-wall comparison: the PBS series "Nova" once declared that the racehorse Secretariat was history's greatest athlete; that he was a fluke of nature, which was borne out when it was discovered, post-mortem, that his heart was almost 4x larger than normal - his unique advantage was having a great "pump"). Reagan, too, was uniquely qualified for his mission to take down the USSR.

We now know that his advanced age (he was essentially 70 when he was first elected) provided him with the advantage of personally witnessing & experiencing communism first hand over a protracted period (assimilating 5 decades of preparation) and made him uniquely qualified to do the job. As the author noted - the reign of Soviet Russia roughly formed the bookends of Reagan's life. Example of the quality of Reagan's preparation: while the press of the 80's & 90's believed that Reagan first understood Poland to be the linchpin for the domino collapse of the USSR only after it was happening, Reagan actually sensed in 1945 that Poland would lead the way. You've got to read this book.

The above noted revelations are but 1 of 3 reasons this book is a favorite. Reason #2 is that these now known facts show that most of his critics' conclusions about him were based more on their prejudices than on informed knowledge & understanding of Reagan; and Reason #3 is my own new understanding of just how comfortable Reagan was in his own skin and in his "plan" - his mission wasn't derailed by negative press or by the delayed response of the economy to his now-proven-to-be-correct fixes for it.

Lastly, let me add that while my review may be dry, the author's writing style is riveting!

i had bought this book for one of my university module's about American propaganda methods, during the last phase of the Cold War.

i can say now, the book is not only a fantastic read about a quite amazing President, but sinks its teeth into Reagan's role in bringing down the USSR. that bit is quite revolutionary, due to the interviews this book has provided on American activities, and the secret intelligence Reagan used to blow up the Siberian pipeline network.

all in all, if you are studying Reagan's period in office or anything about Reagan and psyops, then give this book a go.
