Their close friend Cody Hart – who had lived with them in their teens – was always considered a daredevil bad boy, often leading Darrell into trouble. When Darrell died Cody survived intact. Felicity’s sense of loss, pain and anger lead her to blame him for her twin’s death.
Cody has been trying to follow up with Felicity occasionally; trying to make sure she is OK. When she loses her job, her CEO’s administrative assistant calls Cody to let him know. He feels a responsibility for his childhood friend and best friend’s sister and wants to help. He dreams up a dream job as caretaker of their extensive library for her on his estranged parent's estate, and then coerces her and his parents into acceptance.
Cody convinces himself that he is doing this to honor his best friend’s sister, not because he has any romantic feelings for her. Felicity determines to help heal the estrangement from his parents as part of her effort to forgive him for living while her twin died.
The twists and turns of their renewing friendship and developing relationship reflect author Jade Kerrion’s skill at making a basic romance seem new. Cody’s estrangements from his parents and dedication to his job as an Alpine Rescue team member show him as a strong, caring, but flawed lead character. Felicity’s pain at the loss of both her twin brother and her close friend is compounded by her anger at their best friend and her need to forgive him for surviving. She is a strong woman, willing to work hard toward her goals.
The story was about, Felicity, who works in NYC and loses her job, lives in New Jersey and is down to her last $100. Suddenly, Cody Hart comes into town and offers her a job back in Colorado. The problem is he’s the man who was the cause of her twin brother’s death. She decides to take the job and learn not to hate Cody for what he has done. Cody also has to learn a few things along the way about Felicity and himself. Can they both find love along the way?
(Individual novella as well as in the "Protect and Love" box set)
Having read two of the authors Life Shock novellas previously, I found "Crushed" to be just as wonderful, enjoyable, and engaging as the others.
It is a sweet novella, with a bit of mystery, a bit of forgiveness, a bit of anger, a bit of compromise, a bit of secrets, a bit of family bonding, a bit of family dysfunction, a bit of sadness, a bit of good luck, a bit more happiness, and a lot of love.
The characters are simply wonderful and easily relatable. The author really knows how to use her characters to bring a story alive and to hook the reader into wanting to connect with them.
The plot was well written and brought the reader in right from the beginning. This was one of those "never want to put the book down" until it ends, stories. And I didn't, except when I had to make dinner...ok, I read the best that I could while making dinner...
I have thoroughly enjoyed the novellas I have read in the "Life Shock" series, and "Crushed" definitely is enjoyable...with a whole lot of captivating moments.
Cody has to go see his family for the first time in 12 years to tell them what he has done about offering Felicity a job. His family is so glad to see him, but he still is very standoffish. They like Felicity and agree to the job. They tell Cody he has to come around to help Felicity with her new surroundings. Cody likes to live on the edge and works for the Alpine Rescue Team headquartered in Evergreen. He helps save people who get stuck on the mountains or get lost. It is a dangerous job.
Felicity is trying to get over hating Cody and blaming him for Darrell’s death. Cody is patient with her as he has had a crush on her since they were teenagers, but never let her know or did anything about it. I like Cody and was surprised when I found out why he really left home. Felicity was such a nice person and loved Cody’s family. I loved seeing all the interaction with the family. You need to read the book to see what happens with Cody and Felicity’s relationship. I loved the book. I was given this book for an honest review.
