To make this work effectively I use the following process: Place can in the opening. Gently lower the handle so that it holds the can. Place the pinky finger side of your palm gently on the handle, then quickly strike the handle. You do not want this to be a full force motion, it's simply a way to get the crush started without having to exert a ton of pressure on the handle. Once the crush is started, you can finish it simply by pushing down on the handle. If you use this technique it takes little effort to crush any size can.
My father "by law" as he would say recycles cans every night to donate the money to college scholarships to kids at the University of Louisville and has been doing so for well over a decade. He has a nightly ritual where he crushes and bags the cans and fills his Honda Accord multiple times a week to go cash the cans in all by himself. I figure the least I can do is crush the cans before dropping them off at his house. He is definitely an inspiration and while I don't drink many soft drinks or much beer when I have company I make sure that any cans go into the recycling bin for George!
I have had several before that were made of top grade material. This one is not. When pulling down the handle it wobbles back and forth and has pinched me several times already drawing blood. Almost praying it will soon break so I can get a decent one. Where you pull down the handle it has a cheap piece of foam that supposed to made it have a soft gripe but it is so thin, it's like it doesn't exist.
