What a completely unique experience. I'm not sure if it's a placebo or if I can actually feel the theobromine located inside the yerba mate tea, but upon brewing a cup it really does give a nice sense of "togetherness" in the mind.
As someone with some sort of attention disorder, this is by far one of my favorite caffeine sources!

This Yerba Maté is the basic Maté style for the masses. This style has very light colored leaf, with lots of stems and dust in it. You need fillable empty tea bags for this or decant the sediment that will settle to the bottom after a short while, if you use a standard tea strainer. Steep for a shorter duration than the leaf only Matés, to avoid bitterness.

I have been drinking Yerba mate for around 10 years now, so I guess at this point I could call myself experienced. Yerba mate itself is definitely an acquired taste (like coffee), so I think more about what the purpose is for drinking it than anything else (though now I actually find and prefer the taste of it over coffee.. just seems smoother to me now). I switched to Yerba mate from coffee because I have a reflux issue and coffee literally makes me gag/regurgitate if I try to drink it in the mornings. Another piece I appreciate of the Yerba mate life is that it doesn’t give me the caffeine jitters like coffee does, just a nice “productive” type of energy. So first let me say, if you aren’t used to drinking Yerba mate, this should probably not be the first brand you try (yes a bit stronger taste maybe). I remember my first few times drinking it (not this brand, just in general), comparing it to the smell of a barrel of hay in a horse stable. That’s about right. After many years of drinking it, I have learned if you want to combat the bitterness, drop a little honey and cream in it, or a dab of powdered coconut tea (another new obsession by CACafe, though I have found it cheaper at Wal-Marts that carry it rather than Amazon). Otherwise, if you have gotten used to the taste and it no longer makes you think of things like wet hay, this is an excellent choice because it is more affordable than most brands (especially ones carried in Whole Foods) and still gets the job done. This is ALWAYS my Yerba mate “go to” on Amazon, and I hope they will continue to keep their prices competitive so I don’t have to switch brands.

Great for beginners and beyond

I've only been drinking Yerba Mate for about 1 month. I did a lot of research beforehand and Cruz De Malta came out the clear winner of which I should try first. I read a bunch of reviews and the consensus is that it tastes like a stronger version of Green Tea. I pretty much agree with that. It takes a little while to determine the optimum water temperature, but I now know exactly which temperature suits me best. If you find it bitter, your water is too hot. Stick to between 160 - 170 degrees F (71-77 degrees C) and you will notice a big difference in the flavor, even within that range. Also, don't forget to add dummy water (room temp or cold) before you add the hot water, so the mate doesn't get shocked, which will also make it bitter.

I have tried several other brands, some very well regarded, and have found them wanting. In that case, I mix them with Cruz De Malta and all is right with the world again.

Mate isn't for everyone. It takes a little while to learn how to prepare it properly and how to enjoy it (proper gourd and bombilla selection). If you aren't willing to do that, then don't bother. For those of us that do, I can see the pursuit of the perfect mate could be a lifetime journey. In the meantime I'm willing to enjoy many mates along the way. This will continue to be my "go to" Yerba mate until I find another that can change my mind. Until then, Salud!

I love Yerba Mate! This brand is my favorite of all I have tried. One of the other brands I tried is Rosamonte because of the reviews stating it is stronger. I disagree with that. Cruz De malta Yerba Mate has more potency and flavor, in my opinion. I'm not sure what makes one different from the other, but not all Yerba Mate's are made equal. If you like a stronger, yet smooth flavored tea, you will love this! The Rosamonte is good also; It's just not as potent and full flavored as the Cruz De Malta. I most often drink this as a hot tea, but it is actually quite good as iced tea also.
AND this stuff really does provide lots of energy and stamina. It's a pick me up that wins the long distance race, rather than just a sprint of energy then sleepy time at 3:00. My current schedule has me going non-stop from school to work with only 4 hours of down time to either sleep or study. Without my thermos of Mate, I would not make it through my week awake, functional, and acing my exams, while also working as a valet at night at 40 years old .
My only issue is how the finely ground tea sprinkles out of the packaging. You definitely want to put this into a canister or other sealed container after you open it. That is best for any tea, but this one does not allow for the occasional lazy/in a hurry, I'll just reseal the bag day, unless you want the tea to spill out everywhere.
