Product Description

Cryostasis: The Arctic Circle, 1968. Alexander Nesterov is a meteorologist sent to uncover the mystery of the abandoned ice-breaker ship, North Wind. This steel beast once fought for its country, but during a dangerous mission it drifted into an ice trap that slowly froze to death every living thing on board. A routine investigation quickly turns into a battle for survival against both the freezing elements and the terrifying evil that inhabits the lost ship. Cryostasis takes players on a terrifying trip into the unknown as they explore the dark, frozen, claustrophobic corridors and unlock the shocking secrets of the North Wind.

Cryostasis is a first person game that sort of defies description. Some may call it a FPS, others an adventure game. I believe it melds these two concepts together, and does them well. You play a Russian scientist at the North Pole who is sent to investigate an ice breaking ship that has run aground and become incased in ice. The big hook of this game is the 'Mental Echo' ability that allows you to re-live the last moments of dead crew members and try to correct things that they did wrong before they died. This is a very unique premise, and I rather enjoyed it. There is a lot of trial and error with the Mental Echo ability, but it is pretty painless as you can retry as often as you like (with no loading or game over penalties!) Some people have been comparing this game to Bioshock, but that is an inaccurate comparison. Just because there is a lot of water and water effects around your character does not make this game even remotely close to Bioshock. The action is not very good, and you have several melee options, as well as some rifles to collect. The combat consists of approaching your enemy and hitting him, then backing up while they attack, then approach and repeat. The monsters subscribe to the jump out from the shadows (ala Doom 3) mentatilty to provide cheap scares, however there are some tense moments. The color palette is pretty bland as the ship is iced over, so lots of blue and grey. Some areas of the ship heat up to melt the ice, and the true colors come out, and look very good. Combat overall is actually pretty bad compared to current action games. Keep in mind that this game is not about the action, which makes me feel like this is more of an adventure game. Very good story, creepy atmosphere, and great graphics make this a good choice overall, just know what you're getting into. Also this game is a graphics whore, so have a good system to run it!

Cryostasis isn't actually an FPS game - but it's not a puzzle game, either.

In format it is mostly FPS - go through the level, kill the bad guys, discover the secrets, etc. You have to solve some puzzles along the way as well.

It's 1981, at the height of the Cold War. You play a Soviet meteorologist who has been called home - but on the way you discover a Soviet nuclear ice breaker, abandoned in the ice... a ghost ship. During the game you'll be bombarded with boring history lessons, telling the tale of an ancient tribe in a spirit-infested forest, which supposedly explains how this became a ghost ship.

Everything is very bland. Even if you have a first class video setup (NVIDIA GeForce 9500 or a NVIDIA GeForce 9800, etc), things are going to seem a bit bleak and bland - because the whole game takes place on a ship encased in ice. It's mostly grays and blues. Textures, shaders, and layers are nice, yes, but they're lost in an ice-enshrouded background. The only real color is in the few areas where you have light; otherwise, everything is a bleak grayish-brown which tends to blend together after a while.

The "mental echo" is interesting at first, but if you've ever seen the TV series Quantum Leap, then you know what it's about: you have to relive the last minutes of somebody's life, and try to fix what they screwed up. Some of the "Echoes" can be frustrating, because you need to do them exactly in a specific manner, with very few clues how to go about it.

As far as spooky is concerned - it is supposed to be a semi-horror game, after all - F.E.A.R. has it beat by a mile.

Replay - once you go through it the first time, there's nothing left for you unless you want to go through the fights again. There's only one difficulty level, only one way to go through each level, and no multiplayer - this is basically a one-shot game.

Pros: great graphics (though bland), sound and environment (blinding snow and whipping winds). Realistic, if ancient, weapons. Fairly easy to maneuver, though you'll definitely want to change the default controls to something you can work with.

Cons: slow gameplay. Bleak environment. No real enemy AI. For a supposed 1980's Soviet nuclear ship, the technologies and weapons are of WWII vintage. No crosshairs!

The patch: even though the company site doesn't recommend getting the patch unless you have a high-end graphics card and Vista, you should get it and install it because it has several bug fixes, as well as the new Water Cannon. However, even with the patch and the correct settings, the game tends to lock up and crash in level 11.

It's not bad, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you've done everything else and you're looking for something different. If you prefer fast-moving shooters like "F.E.A.R." or "Far Cry", then you probably won't like this.

One of the nice things, of course, is the fact that there's no DRM - nothing in any form. (Take that, Sony!) You don't even have to have the DVD in to play, which is unusual.

If I had to describe Cryostasis in a word, I'd choose "monotonous". Additionally, it is a stretch to even categorize this game as a "shooter", as it plays more like a disjointed, surreal, interactive movie.

The game has a kind of Half-Life'ish plot. In Half-Life the main character wakes up after a disaster at an underground bio-engineering lab, and has to fight his way to the surface, overcoming all the bio-engineered species that have escaped. In Cryostasis the main character boards a ship that is supposed to transport him out of the Arctic, but discovers that some unknown disaster has occurred, leaving the ship frozen in the ice and filled with the frozen corpses of the crew which come back to life and attack.

While the concept may have some merit. the actual game-play soon left me numb with boredom. I found it to be extremely repetitious, both in the game-play and the look and feel of the graphics.

All the zombies look and behave the same. The frozen rooms are all the same. The colors, graphics and textures are the same. The “historical” visions or flashbacks (movie clips or cut-scenes that occur when encountering a frozen corpse) are extremely similar. Even worse, it is impossible to skip these videos after dying and restarting a level. Since they aren't that compelling to begin with, after multiple viewings they become almost painful.

To top it off the character has to move, and even do battle, at a snail's pace. I guess this is intended to add to the realism-- the movement is slow due to being being so cold. However, rather than adding to the realism, this slow pace just compounds the tedium.

In summary, to me this game really sub-standard. With all the high-quality shooters to choose from, I can't really imagine anyone enjoying this one very much.
