It turns out that Crystal and her friends are witches, and Krissa discovers that those self-same psychic abilities she has makes her a witch, too. What can she do? How is she going to get through the days without allowing her psychic powers get away from her and causing all kinds of grief for her? Will she be able to control her powers? Will she have to work with the other Crystal to tame them?
It's ok otherwise, not great, but mildly interesting. It took me several back and forths to finish it ... wish I hadn't bothered. You've been warned.
Reviews complain about it being too short, not a book. Book 1 is 241 pages. The length is fine, especially for a young reader, but I turned the last page to the next chapter and there weren’t one. Clearwater Witches is a serial, not a series (each book in a series has an arc that begins and ends. A serial begins in book one and ends on the last page of the last book). In this case, there are six books total, totaling 1,574 pages. I wish the jacket told me this before I bought the first installment. You have to purchase them all to get to the ending.
BUT after having said all of this, the “ending” of this installment that is fifteen percent of the way through the serial is stupid and you won’t find me continuing with it. I wish I had a go-back-in-time spell and warn myself not to read this book.
Sadly, her first day starts off with her crossing paths with the "raging bitch" of the school, Crystal Jamison. Fearing things are just going to be the same. Kristyl is rescued by Owen Marsh, dubbed "Krissa" and taken into his group of friends. Now with a sense of belonging, Krissa faces the school days with a smile. Krissa has a secret however, one that could tear her newfound happiness apart.
Madeline draws you in with relatable characters and an easy narrative told by Krissa herself. We get to see the inner workings of the main character's mind and live her experiences through her own words. You want to like Krissa and you root for her "second chance" in Clearwater. Despite the sadness and torment she has experienced, she hasn't become completely bitter and jaded.
I recommend this book especially if you enjoyed movies like "The Craft". While Crystal Magic is a bit less dark, it holds a similar them of witches in high school.
I would have given this book another star except for the cliffhanger ending. I don't mind series. I actually like them because it's kind of like spending time with an old friend(s). But I feel like a book should wrap everything up in one shot then you go on to have new adventures with the same characters in subsequent books. Cliffhangers make me feel like I'm being blackmailed into buying more books. It's just poor form.
