Editorial Reviews

2011 release, the third album from the British Alt-Rock band. Four years after what they themselves describe as a difficult second album, Thirteen Senses recorded, produced and mixed this album in their own London studio via their own B-Sirius label. Crystal Sounds is an expanded and remixed version of the tracks the band placed on their website earlier in the year, adding unheard tracks 'Send Myself To Sleep', 'Concept' and 'In The Crowding'. One listen to Crystal Sounds makes clear what their previous records only glimpsed. Always good with a melody and unafraid of being seen as 'mainstream' the new Thirteen Senses sound is more expansive, more muscular and more experimental. The lack of pressure to release also allowed the band reflective time to revisit the tracks and construct an album that flows, from the more accessible likes of 'Crystal Sounds' and 'Home' at its opening, to the march towards the epic gradients of 'I Saw Stars Disappear'.

Amazon offered a free sample of one of the songs on this album, the title song, "Crystal Sounds". After hearing it and LOVING it, I decided to take a chance and purchase the album. I am not disappointed! The vocals by Will South are beautiful and amazing, the music is melodic and enchanting! I also connect to music by way of lyrics, and the ones on this album are captivating. To give perspective on what type of person might enjoy music by Thirteen Senses, I like alternative music for the most part. I think people who enjoy The Postal Service, Death Cab For Cutie, U2, Arcade Fire and Starsailor would also enjoy Thirteen Senses music. I don't know why I haven't heard them before as they have been recording since 2004, though their music seems to have been more popular in the UK and I didn't see any record of them touring the US when I looked them up on Wiki. I love this band so much I plan on collecting their other CD's.

I've been enjoying Thirteen Senses for several years and I just can't understand how they have not gained a wider audience. Crystal Sounds (much like their previous two albums) is like an out of body experience. Beautiful, transcendent, dreamy, warm and uplifting, but with a tinge of sadness and melancholy...Thirteen Senses is one of those bands that has the uncanny ability to create music that feels like home. It's like you've heard these tunes before, and I don't mean that in a bad way. It's just that the songs seem instantly familiar and likeable, like slipping on a well worn pair of jeans.
I can listen to Crystal Sounds from start to finish and back again. If you like their previous work, you'll love this. If you haven't heard them before, do yourself a favor and come "home".

I discovered thirteen senses on Pandora recently. Their music has a sound similar to Coldplay, Keane, and Death Cab for Cutie. With Lennon and the Beatles vibe. I have their other two cd's The Invitation and Contact now too. Both supurb. It's ridiculous for me to say this but all the songs are good with The loneliest star, Home, Suddenly and After the Retreat being my favorites. The more I listen to this album, the better it gets. I've never done a music review and had to write a review because their music is so incredibly good with great melodies. Their songs stays in your head and you want to listen to them over and over. I downloaded the mp3 version of this album on their website with the additional 7 songs bonus. It was worth paying the extra money with the acoustic version of The loneliest star, After the retreat, Home and Into the fire plus 3 additional brilliant new song. I'm liking Crystal Sounds as much as The Invitation, maybe more now with the additional added tracks. A must get!

Been a fan of 13 Senses and this CD does not disappoint. I don't care for the title track as it sounds contrived (and annoying), but there are so many other good songs that its a moot point. I wish that this album was available at a reasonable price in CD version in order to have printed info on disc and cover. I ended up downloading it in MP3 format as it wasn't available otherwise. I look forward to any new 13 Senses releases as their music fits my style and taste. I hope they will produce more albums. If you like a mellow listen, check this out as well as their earlier releases. They are similar to Coldplay, Keane (older), Ambrosia...

I came across Thirteen Sounds while browsing Spotify and last.fm a few weeks ago, searching for a band with a sound similar to Keane (my favorite band). The first song I sampled was 'Into the Fire' from The Invitation. It sounded slightly familiar, but nonetheless I was hooked. Overall, the band reminds me very much of Keane, and a little bit of Death Cab for Cutie. Thirteen Senses is the band I was looking for!!

If you are a big fan of Keane, you owe it to yourself to give this band a listen. Their songs have a similar feel, flow very nicely, and I find myself singing them often. Especially my favorite songs on Crystal Sounds, which are The Loneliest Star, Animals, and Out There.
