You do, however, have to pay close attention to where the dial is when you're setting the temperature, because when the appliance is sitting on the counter, it is easy to look at it and think you have it set on say 350, when it's actually set closer to 365. This is because the angle that the dial is at is a little off for someone who isn't say 7 feet 6 inches tall standing over a standard height counter. It's just a little optical illusion because of the angle, and if you're careful when setting the temp, it shouldn't be an issue.
The main reason for me only giving this item 4 stars instead of 5 though, is the design of the fryer basket. It comes with a handle that folds over into the basket for easy storage without it having to take up much space. However, this causes a big and somewhat dangerous problem. When you put the basket handle on the basket, if you don't do it EXACTLY right, when you take something out of the fryer and turn the basket upside down to dump the contents, the basket will fold itself down as if to make itself compact for storage. The big problem here is that you have dangerously hot oil that is now being slung directly towards your mid-section (or a child's face). There is no warning about this in the instruction manual...and believe me, after reading it, you would think they had covered EVERY POSSIBLE HAZARD from all the warnings in there about simple common-sense things (like don't tip the fryer over with hot oil in it)....but they fail to mention how dangerous the basket can be, or even give a diagram that is detailed enough to show you how to properly put it together.. This wasn't a problem for me, but for someone who isn't used to thinking about issues like that, it could end up with a very bad burn on a kid's face or an adult's chest or stomach. This shouldn't be a problem though if you do put the basket together properly so that you literally have to unlock the handle every time you store it away, and make sure it is locked when you use it again. However, if you submerge the basket in hot oil before locking the handle in place, you pretty much just have to be careful not to let it flip all the way back onto you when unloading the basket, as it will be too hot to fix the problem once it's submerged.
Overall, the fryer is a good piece of equipment that does exactly what it is supposed to do. One little design flaw in my opinion with the handle design for the basket is the only thing that prevented a five-star review.
The only issue I saw before purchasing this fryer was those heating elements that sit directly in the oil BUT, in the instructions it says that those can be "scrubbed" when necessary too.
Perfect size for me. I'm single and will probably only use this thing maybe twice a month but I do cook alot and it's large enough to prepare my occasional special recipes for freezing that require deep frying beforehand.
It arrived undamaged with the original packaging box packed into a larger box.....and, even with tax/free 2 day shipping was $7 cheaper than at Walmart even with a 10% employee discount (working there to complete a Master's Degree).
