So far we have only ran it to test that it worked and to let it run for 15 minutes as the instructions state. Once we've had a chance to use it to gill some burgers I'll try and update the review.
The spring handle and chain are for using a match to light if required, such as igniter not working. You can always just keep that part separate as it shows mounting the end to one of the screws. I may remove mine as it just kind of hangs there and gets in the way.
I saw some posts about it being difficult to put together, but I had no problems at all - very easy.
