I recently picked up this press. I was shopping around quite long, reading up on reviews and looking at features etc. Then I found this little gem! At first it was PajamaGuy's review that peeked my interest, and seeing the response from a representative from Cuisinart being totally honest about it being a new product and might having to update the instructions included I just had to get it. A company that cares that much do have quality products - and besides, I've tried other products from them and been quite impressed by quality, especially for the low price! So today I finally made my first burgers. It was awesome! Incredibly easy to use - I don't know how people can go wrong with this one. I didn't measure anything, common sense kinda tells you if it will be too much or too little. Just fill it with some ground beef, press it, if not enough, add some more. If overflowing, take away the overflow!People are correct about the meat not coming off super easily, but just add some olive oil to the inside and it will slide right off - and also oil the burger for the grill directly! If doing the stuffed version, just fill up with some ground beef, and press down with the handle. Be sure to have removed the big area before hand (twist handle left or right and remove). Be sure to leave enough space for the beef lid. Just add the stuffing, put more ground meat on top and press again with the "big area presser" attached to the handle again. Presto, stuffed burger! Beautiful!I made stuffed burgers, some I stuffed with a sharp cheddar and chopped chili pepper and the others I stuffed with a regular store bought goat cheese with herbs and garlic. Both came out amazing, with the cheddar/chili combination being the best of the two.I can't wait to try this again when the whole family is at home. Will be a blast for the kiddies to pick out their own stuffing to try with. This will also teach them a bit about taste combinations. Who knows, maybe Cuisinart is the beginning of their chef careers? :)I will definitely be on the lookout for more of the grill products from Cuisinart in the future!
I have had this for a week or three now and have made a couple of batches of burgers with it. I will say that overall I like this tool and would only wish that I had one identical but made from stainless steel. The plastic is really durable and has no effect on the outcome, but I just feel stainless steel would be more attractive, durable, and easier to clean.
CONSTRUCTION: This is well made. No sharp edges or snagging parts. Everything fits well and is designed with holes to be mounted to a board for secure work. Handles are easy to grip and do not cut into my hands. I only wish there was a way to retain all parts so they would not fall apart when stored. Currently the top of the press will come out of the base if allowed to float in a drawer. I just put mine into a zip-lock bag to resolve the issue, works great.
USE: I have not made lots of burgers with this, but have made several batches, more large burgers than sliders. Both instances of the use of this item works well. There is instructions provided on how to use this device, as it can be a little confusing when seeing all the parts loose. It is easy to use though and you should not worry. The surfaces do not stick to the meat badly and the lower plate of both tools comes out to make the job as easy as possible. Just pack the meat inside (I use a spoon to put the meat into the device as it works best, trust me) and after a couple of times you will have the amount needed down to a science. Press the lid down into the mold a couple of times, rotating the handle about 1/3 to 1/2 the way around each time to make things more even. Then just push up from the bottom of the base to remove floor and burger. I just put the burger and floor of tool onto the grill or pan together and then pull up on the plastic floor plate which comes off the burger easily enough. A tip is to line the bottom of the burger press with wax paper, plastic wrap, oil, or even heavy seasoning to make the burgers release the most easy way. You can also stuff burgers with this tool. There is a detachable lid section for that and it works great. It locks on the lid with a slight twist and stays in place while making burgers without an issue.
CLEAN UP: Like said before, I think that stainless steel would be better, but it would cost more as well. I got this on sale for just a couple of dollars. Overall it does clean up nicely. The plastic is not a porous one and all food comes off really easily. I would not just throw this into a sink full of dishes because it could get marred up and I do not know if once this plastic becomes scratched or loosed it finish if it will react the same way. I do not use a dishwasher so I can not say how well it holds up or cleans in one. It is easy to clean though and dry as well. It stores in a compact package as well. I do like to wash mine off with clean water before use each time and spray oil on it before use.
Update 11/2019 - while after all this time we still like this we did find one issue. it has held up great, no color fading, no chips or cracks. the problem however lies in design. the lower cap part on the lid you press down on, it's not easy to remove especially if greasy at all. we found out the first time when it wasn't removed and placed into the dishwasher. it filled the inside of the cap with water that sloshed around when removed from the dishwasher. now when we use it we get that piece off but as said it can be tricky to remove. if you have any hand dexterity issues, arthritis, etc. for those you may want to reconsider. for most folks i think they'll like as we do even if it isn't the easiest to get apart to clean. if not for that one issue i'd have kept it at 5 stars.
nice and sturdy even if not made from metal or ceramic. you get a couple different size inserts for either medium or large sized burgers. very easy to use and clean up after. very happy with!
But this is incorrect. It does not produce 4.5" burgers and 4" sliders as advertised.
It produces 4" burgers and 3" sliders.
And I'm NOT talking about shrinkage during cooking -- I'm talking about the actual diameter of the inside of the mold. The actual diameter of the raw burgers it produces.
I don't understand why Cuisinart is lying about the size of this press. Some people want bigger burgers and some people want smaller burgers, so why not just tell the truth so people can actually buy the correct tool they need?
Best burger press I've used in a long while. Easier, faster and more consistent than doing it by hand. This was my first time making stuffed burgers, and it could not have been more simple. Make a thin patty first, set it aside, then make your "cup" patty, add the filling, press the two together, and voila - stuffed burgers in about a minute. For those who have trouble getting the burgers out, turn the whole thing over, push from the bottom, peel the bottom plate off the burger, and you're done. No need for plastic wrap, non-stick sprays, or anything else. And for an extra treat, smoke over indirect heat using charcoal and cherry wood. A nice juicy, cheese filled burger, with a tasty smoke ring.
UPDATE: After making a few batches of stuffed burgers, I think I finally have all the tricks worked out. First trick - always use cold meat. If you're using meat that has any considerable fat content (i.e. 80/20), it needs to be kept cold, or it will stick to the press. As it warms up, the fat melts and becomes sticky. Which leads to trick number 2 - portion the meat first, refrigerate it, then work in small batches. What seems to give the best results, is a 2oz top patty, and a 4oz cup patty - it's still plenty of meat, but leaves a nice sized cup for a lot of fillings. Portion out 2oz and 4oz balls of meat. Make them in 1:1 ratios so you don't have too many of either top or bottom patties, (i.e 1 2oz patty, then 1 4oz cup patty, as opposed to 20 2 0z patties, then find out you only have enough meat for 15 4oz cup patties). Refrigerate the balls for at least 30 minutes, then take out 6 of each, make your burgers, put the completed burgers back in the fridge, and take out the next batch of balls.
I made mushroom burgers in the attached photo. Next time… falafel burgers. I love that there is a slider option for smaller pattie’s as I don’t eat big portions. This is great for my whole family. I did find that I needed to spray some oil on the contacts plates because they were sticking on the thinner patties.
5.0 out of 5 stars
Works great for veggie burgers.
