The components are easily detachable so you can clean the oil container and strain the oil with ease. There is the outer portion with the handles that holds the oil container (it's just a shell/frame), the oil container bucket that nests inside, and then the heating coils that are permanently attached to the temperature dials up top. There is also a lid and the fryer basket. The power cord is magnetic and it attaches to the back of the unit right underneath the temperature dials. The power cord is a regular two prong cord 120V.
The deep fryer is small but it fries food very well without losing heat. When we decided to fry up a bunch of goodies, we fried the items in order from the lowest heat setting to the max, since that made the most sense. That means that our french fries were last to be fried since they require the highest heat setting. The indicator light will tell you when it's ready and the temperature never defaulted from our desired settings.
The max fill line for the oil is at about: halfway up in depth of the container. The smaller fryer size incited skepticism in us at first but it fries foods quickly without using very much oil, and it felt safer to use than a larger fryer. The heat was consistent, and there was hardly a delay in serving times even though we had to fry in batches.
Straining the oil is easy. Wait for the oil to cool (recommended) and carefully lift the container out and pour the oil through a metal strainer that is nested inside of a larger bowl. Lift the strainer with the burned pieces out of the bowl and then pour the oil back into the container for re-use. You can then add fresh oil if the oil level has diminished.
We are a family of 3 and the basket size is great, but the unit also has the ability to do larger jobs. For a recent party I was invited to I made 4 dozen each of Southern Corn Fritters and Rhode Island Clam Cakes. Temperature control and drop is such that I never had to stop and wait between batches.
Cleanup is an absolute joy as the unit comes apart in a few seconds and everything except the control/heating unit can go in the dishwasher. The heat coils clean easily with a soapy sponge.
Pouring spout for the oil is well designed so no drips. Easy to filter the oil and re-use. With a high quality oil I can get several uses from one fill. If I have done a small job such as a few pieces of fish or chicken I simply that the oil pan and let it cool to room temperature, then cover with foil and put the whole pan in the fridge.
I can fry 6 raw wings/legs at a time. They are not small. I purchase them from the butcher.
There is a magnetic chord. During the times I have used it it had never come off. I don't understand the other reviewers complaining about it.
I kept the fryer in one spot with no need to move it.
When I cook frozen food I drop the basket and out the lid on at the same time. I had no splatter.
Cleaning couldn't be any easier. I let it cool down.
Then I pour the oil in a recycled jar.
You can put the basin, basket, handle and lid in the dishwasher.
I soap up and run the heating elements under piping hit water. The plastic part with the dials cannot be submerged in water. I soap it up with a sponge carefully and wipe down with a dry rag.
You can put the basket, handle and chord inside for storage.
If you want to feed more then two people without wait time, this size will not work for you.
