Excellent and Reliable Mixer
I own the Cuisinart Power Advantage 5-Speed Handheld Mixer since early April 2009 and I am quiet happy with it thus far. In all fairness, this is my second handheld mixer and my previous mixer (Proctor Silex 62535 Bowl Rest 5-Speed Mixer, White) was a very weak mixer, which simply did not have the power to mix any semi-thick dough. This Cuisinart mixer has significantly more power (220 Watts) and has little trouble mixing most dough, excluding bread dough of course. This mixer has an automatic feedback mechanism which was the main reason I decided to purchase it. Unlike most mixers which supply their motors with different electric powers at different settings, this mixer supplies electric power partially based on the mixing speeds. In other words, it will supply an extra burst of power to the motor when the mixing speed is slow, like mixing tough dough. It only does so temporarily to avoid over heating the motor. It has five speed settings, which is exactly what I want. For those who like additional speed settings, there is the Cuisinart HM-70 Power Advantage 7-Speed Hand Mixer, Stainless and White. Keep in mind, their top speeds are the same as they are both powered by a 220 Watts motor. In my opinion, the slow speed setting of this mixer is a bit too fast. Beside the power, the mixer has three other features which I like a lot. First, it can sit nicely on a mixing bowl (when the power is off). Second, the power cord can swing left or right to allow the unit to securely sit upright. I have uploaded two customer images to illustrate this. Third, the beaters are easy to clean. Finally, the beaters can be effortlessly ejected by using the level. Looking at the photo, you may think this mixer has a semi-dull black. In reality, it has a shiny glossy black, which I think, looks even better. For those who prefer white color there is the: Cuisinart HM-50 Power Advantage 5-Speed Hand Mixer, Stainless and WhiteIn summary, this is a powerful and affordable handheld mixer (not powerful compared to stand mixers)Update:I do have one compliant. Years ago, customers were able to take their home appliances apart to fix them. Unfortunately, this mixer is not one of those. Cuisinart have sealed off the screw holes and prevented customers from opening up the mixer. My mixer was making some scratchy noises and I could tell it just needed some machine oil/lubrication. Instead of taking the unit apart and adding oil, I had no choice but to pour the oil from outside through the exhaust fan hole, hoping it will get to the place. It did somewhat, and now the noise has been minimized. However, it should have been more straightforward than this.I still think this is a very nice mixer for its utility and affordable price, and I would still strongly recommend other potential buyers to consider it. However, it would have been nicer if the screw holes are not sealed.*Update on late Nov 2009*: The mixer is still working fine -- bought it since April 2009. The scratchy metal noise has not come back for some time. By the way, I use this mixer about 3 times per month for cookies and pastries. I hope this illustrates how often this mixer is being used. I am very satisfied with the product thus far.*Update on Jun 26, 2010*: Still working fine.*Update on May 31, 2011*: Still working.*Update on Jan 05, 2012*: Still working

Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2011
Style: 9-SpeedPattern Name: MixerColor: Brushed ChromeVerified Purchase
I was a bit wary of purchasing this item. I saw it in a store and thought the beaters might be too flimsy and then read the mixed reviews here and thought maybe it wouldn't be powerful enough or last long. I read the reviews of several other mixers as well, though, and all of them had mixed reviews.

I also wasn't sure if the cord placement would bother me or not. My older mixer, which I've had for over ten years, works just fine, but the cord comes out the front (the side with the beaters) aimed in the same direction as the beaters. It's impossible to use it without the cord curving up and either ending up in the bowl or sliding around on the counter (possibly knocking stuff over). It's a nuisance, and the main reason I decided to get rid of the old mixer. Since this Cuisinart mixer also has the cord on the front, I actually decided on another mixer; however, that mixer was out of stock everywhere I looked.

In the end, I decided to try this one because I have a couple of other Cuisinart items that have a matching finish, and I liked the idea of the storage case and the whisk attachment. The cord does not bother me at all. The cord comes out of the mixer aimed for the bottom of the mixer, so when you are mixing, it hangs down where it should, and doesn't curl back up toward the mixer. Also, the little thing that allows you to turn the cord one way or another works great to keep the cord out of the way while mixing.

So far, I've used this mixer to make chocolate chip cookies and frosting for a birthday cake. My daughter used it to make the birthday cake. The beaters held up well and worked fantastic. I had also wondered if it wouldn't mix well with the wire beaters, but it mixed just fine, better than any other mixer I've used. The lack of a post in the middle of the beaters and the thinner beaters meant that I didn't have excess dough or batter on the beaters either.

The cookies came out great. With my old mixer(s), I only mixed the wet ingredients and then stirred in the dry ingredients by hand. I decided to try mixing in the flour with this mixer and it handled it just fine. Actually, it was better than fine. When I mix by hand, it's always difficult to make sure all the flour gets mixed in, and this mixer did that with no problem at all--no pockets of flour underneath the dough. The recipe I used did not make an extremely heavy dough, though.

The cake also came out pretty well. This mixer had no trouble mixing the batter well, and the frosting was light and fluffy.

So far, I'm very pleased.

The one thing I didn't like was storing the cord in with the clean attachments. I solved this by folding up the cord with the attached tie, and then inserting this into a small sandwich bag before putting it into the storage case. This has worked fairly well.

I did notice the slight surge when you turn it on that others have noticed. When I turn mine on, it hesitates for a second, then surges slightly, and then slows down to the correct speed. I know this is supposed to be a slow start and it's not really slow, but I didn't find it to be a problem or to make a mess. The slight surge is only for a second or maybe two. Not a big deal for me.

I've only had it for a couple of weeks now, so only time will tell if I'll have trouble with the motor or any other problems. For now, I'm very pleased.

TLDR shorthand version
Solid mixer, handles stubborn dough well
Comes with a variety of solid attachment tools that are dishwasher safe
Smooth transition between speeds
Can be stored easily not taking up much space
Quick release can be accidentally hit easily
No cut out for the cord in the back of the plastic case makes storage slightly more difficult

Chocolate chip cookie and bread dough are some of the most stubborn acting kinds out there and this mixer stood through multiple batches of each. It can get hot and it can slow down but as long as your not trying to force it to do everything as fast as possible at top speed. This mixer is a trooper. Every dough in the photo's was mixed using this mixer The dough hooks are good as far as I can tell. The whisk can feel a bit small at times but the size helps the mixer travel. Mixers are good as well and all 3 are dishwasher safe. My biggest gripe about it as a whole would likely be the quick release button being a trigger on the handle. Sometimes when thinking quickly I treat it as the on switch and shoot the mixers into the bowl. Second gripe would have to be not having a cut out for the cord in the clear plastic. Also one thing that struck me as odd is instead of a soft start, this mixer starts fast then slows down. Overall its a really solid mixer and im glad I bought it.

Nothing to dislike. I love my mixer. Would not want to be without it. It is my 2nd. And I highly recommend it.

Great mixer for the price. Some might find it a bit heavy if you are holding it for a couple minutes of use. Lots of speed options. Beats whipping cream in very little time.
