Another issue with this is the way that the ice is "shaved". In a good shaved ice/snow cone maker, the ice comes out almost like a fine snow. In fact, the machine I ended up purchasing (which is really intended for stores, but was only $20.00USD more than this one), you could make snowballs out of the resulting ice. This machine, when fed the same exact ice, struggles and churns until it spits out this "snice" like stuff (if you've ever lived in an area that gets a lot of snow and sleet you know that snice is "snow, ice, and sleet" all in one mixture and is heavy to shovel, but more importantly with regard to this machine, makes horrible snow cream and snow cones. The texture is more of what you would put in a drink that you wanted to cool quickly without caring about the amount of water dilution or the type of ice used in an Icee/Slush Puppy type drink. This is not good and doesn't work well for making snow cones and the like.
There are several other less expensive, same priced, as well as slightly more expensive, all metal machines for sale on Amazon right now. Do yourself a favor and skip the kiddie toys and buy a real machine if you plan on using it more than once or twice. This sort of "looks" nice, but it's just not the one for me.
Recommend this for great family fun!
April update. This machine has been used every day since we got it. It is working as well as it did in August. I fix the ice for my daily ice tea. The Cuisinart is well worth the extra cost. This still gets a 5 star rating.
This machine grinds quickly and I have cones for several people in a couple of minutes. It uses any size ice, straight from the freezer is better. The grind is part snow, part chips. I've experimented with different ice and get pretty much the same result. We would prefer all snow. It's easy to use and clean. The bin is a good size for several cones. It came with cones but we're using cups and bowls. It's just easier and not as messy for kids. The side does flip down to hold the cones should we want them. The bin slides out easily to access the snow. It's an every day event at our house now.
Sure, the kids love it. but we're making BOOZE SLUSHIES and SNOCONES. (I'm serious. This thing makes a majestic gin + tonic slush.) Recipe below:
Our favorite snocone yet: The Gin + Tonic + Lime + OMG
Step One: Make snocone like it's for the kids. Smile with glee as you say, "THIS ONE IS FOR MOMMY." Watch the tears of confusion turn to instant bitterness. (Put another $10 away for therapy.)
Step Two: After ice is packed well in snocone, in a glass stir: 1 shot gin, a dash of tonic, 1/2 lime squeeze and the triumph of knowing as an adult, you get to eat a booze snocone.
Step Three: After stirring well, pour mixture over snocone. Repeat until it's no longer hot outside, but seemingly a comfortable 70 degrees.
Other than that, you really can't beat the price for what it is... I originally bought it to use it for Birthday Parties, or any type of get together but my family has been using it on occasion, so I'm definitely getting my money's worth.
Comes with 4 plain white, reusable snow cone cups and a scoop. (Does not include the straws, flavoring or disposable "sno-kone" cups in the photos).
The stock photo shows this machine in a red color. Mine is gray - which I actually like better but if you're expecting red you might be surprised to open a gray one. It is extremely light, so moving it around is no problem.
Overall, I have found it to be very easy to operate, and it shaves ice fairly quickly. I think it will serve parties including many people without any issues.
