I have been purchasing the Culligan FM-15RA Level 3 Faucet Filter for several years from Amazon using the subscribe and save plan.
In the past these filters were always shipped in a separate shipping container and always arrived in great shape. However, my last shipment arrived with the filter in the same box as two other heavy items. Unfortunately, those two other heavy items caused severe damage to the water filter. To the point where the water filter arrived in THREE pieces! This permitted seeing exactly how these filters are manufactured and operate.
The filters when Amazon manages to get them to me undamaged, are OK. Nothing spectacular but just OK. They also USED to be great but lately the quality control seems to be going down hill. The filters sometimes fall apart before I get full use out of them. Some filters have a flow rate that is so fast it made me wonder if the water was going AROUND the filter instead of THROUGH the filter. And I've recently got a few where the flow rate was so slow it was like the filter was plugged up from day one.
Not I know why !!!
By looking at the filter that arrived in three pieces, it's easy to see why the flow rate was so fast through some of these filters.
The filter consists of a carbon blocked GLUED between the top and bottom of plastic housing that makes up the filter. If either of these joints fail, the water does indeed go AROUND the filter!
So if you should get a filter where the flow rate seems faster than normal, you may wish to investigate.
See attached photos.
I see that some of the recent reviewers are experiencing the same thing.
I considered trying out a filter system from a different company, but their reviews weren't the best, so I bit the bullet and bought another Culligan filter. I'm glad I did. The new filter is of the quality I came to expect from this company.
It sucks that I had to eat the money for the bad filter, but I've had a good run with Culligan and I will continue to buy their product.
I realize that this sounds completely opposite of what I just stated, so let me explain....With each new faucet filter the water pressure of the filtered water seems to change. With our last filter replacement for instance, whenever I wanted filtered water, the water would come out very slowly (it would take me about 3-4 minutes to fill up a medium sized pitcher of water), however, with our current filter, the water comes through much faster and that same pitcher of water will only take 1-2 minutes to fill up. This may not be a big deal, but I have found the water pressure output consistency to change with almost every filter over the years, and it is a bit frustrating. When I get a "good" filter (I.e. one that will fill up a glass of water much quicker) I find that I drink a lot more of the filtered water, but when I get a bad/slow filter, I sometimes bypass using filtered water altogether because I don't want to have to stand at the sink for several minutes just to fill up glasses of water for my family at dinner time.
This may seem trivial, but I am a busy mom that is constantly filling up my kids water bottles, so after awhile it does get frustrating, and for that reason I am considering switching to a more consistent filtering system.
