Their stories will draw you right in to the point where you don’t want to put the book down. I loved both of these characters from the very beginning. You have to really understand trauma and grief to understand Kyle and Ben. This is a different type of love story. It is the culmination of everything you could ever go through, but it turns each hurt into something beautiful.
The catalyst to Kyle's metamorphosis was Sugar Valley and by happenstance, Ben! If you're expecting a man that was purposed to sweep a damsel in distress off her feet and show her everything great about the world, KEEP ON LOOKING... Cause he ain't Ben. However, Kyle already had that and no longer needed it. Ben's exterior was a lot tougher and crass than what was brewing in his heart and spirit. I loved that they had an unconventional route to their romance and even on the last page, they both were still very much guarded.... but it was absolutely an HEA for Kyle & Ben and where they are in life.
What I love most about CCJ's writing is that she crafts events and ideas that turn into stories about real people, with real problems in a real world. Ben & Kyle could have easily been a sister, brother, friend, coworker. Everything about them was relatable... at times sad, but still relatable. She gets how to tell the essential stories without coming across as preachy or over the top.
I'm not sure where this series is going next, but I'm here for all of it! I'm absolutely drinking the Sugar Valley water!
Loved everything about this story: the characters, the storyline and the beautiful location - even the dog was adorable. There was a lot of heavily, but there was a lot of funny, too. As usual, CCJ makes the secondary characters just as interesting as the primary. And I love the way she portrays the more 'seasoned' characters. Just because we're middle-aged doesn't mean we've lost our sass, spunk or sexy, lol (#greyhairdontcare!) .
Excellent way to kick off this series. Loving everything about Sugar Valley and it's sense of community. Can't wait for our next visit!
Kyle and Ben were intoxicating, I love a good love/hate dynamic because that means that there is unbridled passion bubbling at the surface. CCJ has been the author that often teleports her reader to the afro centric, urban metropolis Mahogany Heights but this time the trendy epicenter is exchanged for a small town landscaped with trees, mountain, expansive land and I was totally here for it.
I inhaled this book in one sitting, I could not get enough. The story was complete but left room for so much more. This is another certifiable banger! Read this one today!
