Are you truly taking care of yourself?
Or are you too busy taking care of everyone else?
So many of us find it easier to love other people than to love ourselves. We struggle to put our own needs first and have a hard time asking for what we want, let alone going after it. Instead, we attach ourselves to selfish people, trying over and over to win love from those who simply can’t offer it.
If that sounds familiar, you may be the victim of narcissistic abuse.
In A Cult of One, Richard Grannon exposes the insidious effects of narcissistic abuse and shares his own winding road to recognition and recovery. Through martial arts, mysticism, psychedelics, and psychology, spanning over four continents and forty-four years of life, Grannon discovered a systematic discipline for healing. Join him as he explains step by step—with courage, humor, and optimism—how to forge your own path to a better life.

"I deeply appreciate Richard Grannon's work in helping people understand and overcome narcissistic abuse and cult brainwashing. While what was done to many of us might have been unavoidable and perhaps out of our control, the healing and preventative measures are very much in our control. Grannon inspires us to find our individuated self and interrelate with society as a more whole human, dropping essential knowledge for living a more meaningful life."
— Mark Vicente, film director
"To be on the receiving end of narcissistic abuse is disorienting, to say the least. It can also create destructive relationship patterns in the recipient that are hard to recognize and difficult to overcome. In this inspiring book, Richard Grannon combines the spiritual, the philosophical, and the practical. With his usual humility and good humor, he takes us through his own journey to triumph over the abuse that set him on a difficult path."
— Shawn Smith, MD, psychologist and author
"This book, filled with the author's touching personal life's experiences, gives priceless insights on how to live and survive our minds and the abuse of others. This is a must-read."
— Piero San Giorgio, bestselling author of Survive the Economic Collapse
"Richard Grannon's work has been the most effective, practical, and relatable approach for properly making sense of the complexities within interpersonal relationships and internal struggles that I have found. He cuts straight to the source and always gives a very useful method to understand and deal with the issues at hand. I would highly recommend this book to anyone dealing with the adversities of life."
— PierreXO, musician
"I so appreciate Richard Grannon's work. He is a major force in enlightening the world about the travesties and widespread incidence of complex PTSD. I continuously hear from many survivors about the therapeutic helpfulness of his work."
— Pete Walker, psychotherapist

He gives succinct, practical and personally adaptable advice to dealing with ourselves (who are usually struggling with codependency).
By articulating the experiences and forms of codependency it’s really helped me shine light on some parts I thought others didn’t understand.
I’m really grateful that the author shared his journey and gave great advice for reconnecting with myself and breaking the relationship with a harsh inner critic.
I haven't been reading a lot lately, so I expected to just dive into it a chapter at a time. A day later, I had devoured the entire thing! It was captivating, validating, and incredibly insightful.
I really appreciated the honesty in which Richard showed up and shared his story. As a folllower, I had always wondered how he came to be such an expert. I see that like so many of us who find our way into coaching, the path was not really a chosen one. He learned all he could for his own survival. My story is somewhat similar, as I offer support to women in this type of healing work and wrote the book, "Online Dating for Sensitive Women" to help others with the challenges I've faced.
If you have ever struggled with codependency or narcissistic abuse, I know you will get much support and healing from the simple exercises shared in "A Cult of One." My copy is filled with highlighted passages that I plan to return to when in need. One of my favorites is this affirmation: “I am my own self. I am only responsible for the things I can control. Other people and their problems are entirely their problems. I detach from the impulse to solve other people’s problems for them.”

He is so honest and encourages you to see things from different perspectives.
Best of all he encourages you to empower yourself.
Unlike other books on narcissistic abuse where I have been left feeling like a victim, Richard encourages you to change your view of what you have been through, to learn and grow and truly value yourself so you no longer allow those kinds of people into your life anymore.
This book is highly recommended for absolutely everyone, because in reality we are living in a narcissistic world where we are all affected by narcissistic types on all parts of the spectrum in all areas of our lives.
The only part I really couldn’t relate to was the politics of consumerism and capitalism as the unquestioned root of all evil. I believe capitalism is as good or bad as the laws the politicians create to regulate it, politicians we freely vote in. And what would we replace it with? Careful what we wish for.
Finally I think its incredibly brave to write a book like this about your own experiences and to be so open and honest about your family history, it was very interesting and enlightening and I assume it is proof that you can retain some relationship with your family and still write a book like this, to be true to yourself. I wish I was so brave. I also really liked that he says he hasn’t figured it all out, this was very relatable. I wish him well in the reminder of his healing, I am confident he will get there and continue to help a lot of us along the way for which I am very grateful.
My knowledge of narcissistic abuse and co-dependent behaviour is both personal and professional. I was raised by a narcissistic mother and have had many narcissistic/codependent relationships in my time. But I am also trained as a therapist, (specifically in Transactional Analysis) and have met many clients who have also subconsciously fallen into such toxic relationships.
Richard has always been a bit of a mythical kind of individual if you’ve followed his YouTube channel. I think he’s more than aware of how he can be perceived at times. I’d say this book helps dispel some of that cultish tag he can carry and shows his more human side and his lived experiences.
Whilst the book didn’t teach me anything I don’t already know about toxic relationships, it was nice to learn more about Richard and see another side to his personality.
Well done for being brave and publishing it!
Richard is so elegant and eloquent with his use of the English language .Reading this book was interesting informative and an enjoyable read. Would highly recommend.
