Second only to Robert Nisbet (The Quest For Community) in magnitude in the constellation of great communitarian-traditionalist writers is Robert Novak. These two writers along with a host of others, help us to recognize that the solution to all spiritual, moral, political, and economic challenges in the social sphere must involve a return to the organic communities which are their natural building blocks. The right ordering of society is a direct function of strong families, churches and community groups. The "arm of the flesh" of synthetic political parties cannot support societies which are fragmented at their roots. And all big overweening governments can do is to obscure underlying problems and pass off the costs of their quixotic exploits to the more reliable members of their societies. As Mr. Novak states: "Without the bourgeois family and the virtues it nourishes, democratic self-government does not seem possible. In that case, the American experiment, like a meteor flashing briefly through history, has commenced an accelerating descent." (p. 141)
Surely this cannot come as a revelation to any objective observer. Families have always been the core elements of society. How any sound mind could think that a government which seeks to undermine the nuclear family could enjoy success at any higher level is frankly as inscrutable as the mystery of iniquity itself. And yet, this is precisely descriptive of the demise of western, and particularly American society. America is in desperate need of assessing and addressing its "moral ecology."
