Casey is a retired Combat Musician, making a living playing small gigs at her local bar. Jake is a professional con man. They need a new couch, which has nothing to do with anything really.

Caught up in events they never wanted a part of, Casey and Jake must now save everything they love, working through obstacles strange, frustrating, and occasionally impossible, in an even more impossible city. And if they're really lucky they'll solve the couch problem.

They live in Mur, the first human city. Long since cast adrift in time and space, it is secretly protected by three Forces, believed to be myths: The Cat With No Face, The Grandmother of Keys, and The Silent Heart. Only accessible by seven gates that randomly appear on the other side of any door on Earth, in any time, Mur slides along the path of humanity silently. If you're not careful, or possibly if you're fortunate, you can end up there.

Fantastical & Delightful Worldbuilding, with Characters You Wish You Could Befriend

Culture’s Skeleton is an incredible new work by Adam P. Knave that takes his deft storytelling and worldbuilding in an exciting direction. You’ll fall in love with Mur and its inhabitants, especially Jake and Casey. It’s so much fun to read a book with characters that feel like friends, who you can get to know while already feeling like you’ve known them for years. Like coming home.
But even great characters need a world that will test them, and Culture’s Skeleton presents the most original premise I’ve read in a long time. This first city, this timeless place, is truly beyond understanding. Fantastical without being magic, concise I’m its rules, but never pithy. It’s a challenging environment to live in, but a joy to read about. And that’s what this book is: absolute joy.

Picked up Culture's Skeleton a couple of weeks ago, have been digging into it in the last week. The author has built a fascinating world - a city set adrift in time and space (to use a cliche!), and the people who live within its walls. This story focuses on two specific individuals, and it's a wonderful tale, full of mythology and glimpses of past and future that are tantalizing. I mean, how do someone get to be a Combat Musician?? Anyways, read this book. It's good stuff.

As a fan of Adam P. Knave's writing, I was looking forward to this book, but it exceeded my expectations-- even better than his previous novels. The characters feel very real and ground the insane situations. There's a beating heart and real humanity to this magical book. I recommend it wholeheartedly!

A Damn Fine Read

Imagine a book where there’s a life-or-death struggle and the heroes do their best to find nonviolent, non-lethal solutions to the conflict outside. Adam Knave makes this work. The solutions are organic, require strength from the characters, and are not inauthentic hug-it-out changes of heart.
Adam Knave’s books are such good reads. He has a fun writing style, great settings, and characters you care about.
I highly recommend this book.

Culture's Skeleton has the vibe of Hitchkicker's Guide to the Galaxy while having it's own voice. Things in Mur work by their own rules and Mur is really its own character. A lesser writer might have made characters from different time periods tropes of that era, but instead readers get a feeling of how people are connected despite where (or when) they are from. If you are looking for something with a lot of style and heart look no further!
