My Thoughts:
This is kind of a book review, but not completely a book review. This is more along the lines of a couple paragraphs of me going off on the experience of reading every poem by the wonderful E.E. Cummings over all of 2012. That’s right. I read every E.E. Cummings poem in a year. I am quite proud of this.
I had read a few handfuls of E.E. Cummings poems before buying this book but I knew I was going to love it. And I wasn’t wrong. I was completely right. I LOVED THESE POEMS. I started marking the page every time I found a poem I wanted to reread again and again. I ended up marking 52 altogether. There’s just something about his poetry that draws me in and captivates me.
It’s hard to explain completely how much you can take away from poetry when you read it. I can see how certain poems or poets can be hard to read, but when you find one that is enjoyable it is truly a great experience. E.E. Cummings is that poet to me.
My Rating: Exceptional

About the Author
E. E. Cummings (1894–1962) was among the most influential, widely read, and revered modernist poets. He was also a playwright, a painter, and a writer of prose. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he studied at Harvard University and, during World War I, served with an ambulance corps in France. He spent three months in a French detention camp and subsequently wrote The Enormous Room, a highly acclaimed criticism of World War I. After the war, Cummings returned to the States and published his first collection of poetry, Tulips & Chimneys, which was characterized by his innovative style: pushing the boundaries of language and form while discussing love, nature, and war with sensuousness and glee. He spent the rest of his life painting, writing poetry, and enjoying widespread popularity and success.
George J. Firmage edited many works by Cummings, including Erotic Poems; Complete Poems, 1904– 1962; and Fairy Tales.
Stephen Dunn (1939―2021) was the author of nineteen poetry collections, including the Pulitzer Prize–winning Different Hours. His poems have appeared in The New Yorker, Atlantic, and American Poetry Review, among many other publications. He was a distinguished professor emeritus at Richard Stockton University and received an Academy Award in Literature, among many other honors.

I purchased this rather hefty and thick book of E.E. Cummings' work for a friend who is a devoted fan as a gift. Her old copy from decades ago was literally falling apart with yellowed, brittle pages. She was delighted upon receiving it and marveled at the great condition the book was in. There was as silky smoothness to the pages that either one of us couldn't' quite place. In all, it was a solid purchase and I'm glad my friend enjoyed the gift.

All of e.e. cummings' poetry in one place - what more could you ask for? It's not a sit down and read it all at once kind of book - but boy have I enjoyed picking this up and randomly flipping to pages and devouring what's there. He writes beautifully.

The book was hit pretty hard and not well described in the listing. I probably would have opted to pay more had I known.

Unfortunately, the book was used, which I did not realize, though I probably would have ordered it anyway. However, the cover was soiled somehow and there were two sales tag stickers wrapped around the spine and part of the back cover that were impossible to cleanly remove. It took me a long time to try to make the book marginally presentable for my extensive collection of books of poetry and about poets. I am glad to have this book, but the experience does not deserve a high rating.

I love E.E. Cummings and was so excited to find this book. I bought a new one and didn’t mind spending the extra money on it... that was until I received it and noticed the huge knick in on the front cover... if I would’ve known it was going to be damaged, I would’ve saved myself the money and bought a used one.

i'll words you some
to mark the turning of a final page
that smally turned in vastlier turning space
the closing of your this and nowly closing book
to notch another notch in life and hourly turning time
and time's long memory of disappearance and forgetting
which (so onwardly and upwardly) is
much the thing she seems so best to do
thanks e.e.
for songs of clever-fingered spring, time's giftless gift and light of waitless hope
for your indomitable sonnets of immense and strong brown arms of summer
for elegiac strains of now and actually autumn and departures unimagined
and the grey chants of iron winds, of ice and truth and winter's wishless snows
you made rain talk, stars dance, and birds into flowers into mornings
you made low life high and squirming unlife seem the grubby sin it is
and the good life of good lands you made known and present and maybe even to be god's
but best of all your love of love and all things loving loved in all its factual mystery
thanks for these and all the otherness of brilliant things that you contained and smiled and sang
in a world of over many songs yours i will remember
thanks e.e.
sleeping now atop some mountain of perpetual gone
yet you leave some how this little noone of a self of me
a little readier than unaccompanied it could ever someone be
to dissolve in restless rest beside and with you into white and joyous static
bright beyond all bright of that huge and final Isness

EE Cummings Liveright Publishing Hardcover
Reviewed in India on August 30, 2021Verified Purchase
I’ve always been a fan of E E Cummings and fortunately this copy was on a good bargain. The original price is 50$ so you could compare the prices in the future according to the sellers. I bought it from the seller - Cloudtail. As mentioned, it was on sale for which I received a stained and tattered copy. Nonetheless being that this is my first copy of Cummings’s complete works, I have decided not to part with it. Purely for sentimental reasons, that is.
As for the Liveright Publishers, they have done an amazing work. The sewn bindings are perfect and the paper quality is among the best. I loved the fonts as well. This is how a book of poetry must be published. Spacious and pleasing to the eyes.
