Cuphead is a classic run and gun action game heavily focused on boss battles. Inspired by cartoons of the 1930s, the visuals and audio are painstakingly created with the same techniques of the era, i.e. traditional hand drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds, and original jazz recordings. Most games are mostly levels with Boss fights at the end, this game is mostly boss fights with a little bit of levels spread in between. Thing is, these levels arent necessarily so easy either. I swear i have tried one of them at least 100 times. I know where everything is, and how it all happens, yet every single time i die. I hate that place and have cursed it on multiple occasions. And yet, its okay, i STILL love this game and consistently find myself coming back to it to try and get a little further. Another nice thing is, if you are caught up on a specific level you can skip and come back to it later. There are always at least 2 or 3 different levels you can enter at any given time.
I really dont have anything to say bad about this game. It is a challenging arcade retro style side scrolling shooter. Reminds me of the days of Contra and lord knows i never beat those games. Its not even expensive compared to some games!
If you plan on redeeming the code for PC, just don't make the mistake I made by getting the app version from the Microsoft store. It is bugged, and stopped working after only one day. The intro screen comes up for 2 seconds, then the entire window closes. I had to re-purchase the game on Steam. Still worth it, in my opinion. I don't think you will ever see another game like this, unless knock-offs appear down the road.
Cuphead is a classic-style shooting game with an amazing art style reminiscent of Terrytoons, Fleischer cartoons and Silly Symphonies, those 1930's delightful animated Technicolor shorts that delighted so many generations with their silly and bouncy animation.
Everything about this game gives homage to old cartoons and side-scrolling shooters at the same time. The protagonists are blue and red, just like in 2-player mode in Contra and Gunstar Heroes to distinguish Player 1 and Player 2, and the first level is even a throwback to Contra's Jungle level with a fortress-like mini-boss at the end and all. It's a love-letter to old Nintendo and Sega and arcade players who have gone through countless lives and quarters to have a shot at the final boss.
When you break it down, this is the killer app for the Xbox One. And it is proof that the small creative studios that put out simple, fun and addictive games like this are the ones that will really inherit the crown of the video game kingdom. A true masterpiece and a lot of fun! Highly recommended.
To be completely honest, though, my review is not a perfect 5 stars. I have to agree with the criticism that the game is a bit too hard. Right off the bat, it took many attempts for me to get past level one. Long story short, I've gotten much better at the game, but I think if the difficulty was dialed back just a bit, that would make the game more accessible especially to kids and casual gamers. My fiancee has this feedback to offer: "They should have midway checkpoints and health point bonus opportunities". I agree. Without checkpoints, the game gets very repetitive when you try to defeat bosses. And having at least one chance per round to get an extra health point... would... be nice?
Anyway, I have yet to finish the game and it already feels like a masterpiece! 4.95 stars!!!
