This is not only a new book, it's a whole new genre. It's a book about relationships, told through fascinating characters experiencing trouble in their relationships. These are characters who have to deal with real troubles in today's world. And they're all interconnected. The stories are fascinating and I really care about the characters. I couldn't put it down, and wanted to keep reading it. But it's like short stories, (so there are natural places to take a break) and then the characters themselves keep the stories going after it seems the stories are done, and then the characters interact with each other in other stories. Everything is connected. The characters deal with health problems, infidelity, infertility, trauma, and have to figure out ways to keep going and keep it together -- like we all do. It's not really a self help book, but it gives amazing and potentially helpful insight into relationships. It's not exactly fiction -- it's said to be based on true stories-- but it has intriguing stories and compelling characters. It's not really like anything I've read before, and it's really good.

“It’s a strange twist,” says Jory, “but giving love to someone isn’t necessarily giving; it’s just as much taking…. We know we could do better, if only we weren’t so human.”

Like Rod Serling in the 1960s TV sci-fi thriller, The Twilight Zone, his observant narrative (and appendix discussion questions) add universal insight as ordinary people step up to the microphone and speak, talk to each other—and to themselves— step out, cop out, embrace, hate, live and die before our eager eyes.

Jory shines when he allows his colorful characters to express their own motivations and revelations about love of self (Maria), love of things (Tony) and love of another (Libby), fleshing out their intersecting life stories in the fictional burg of LoveJoy, USA, to ask and illustrate what love is and isn’t.

Important life lessons in relationships

In the opening chapter the author asks “What it is like to be in relationship with you.” It is the basis of his book, and it reveals so much more than a cursory look at personal and intimate interactions. Dr. Jory invites his readers to establish an attitude of self-reflection while reading “Cupid on Trial.” The stories of each couple expose love, conflict and turmoil. The resolution of each situation rests in the strength of self-discovery and communication. The town of Lovejoy and its inhabitants are not unique. Everyone is interconnected, sometimes in very surprising ways. It was a joy to read Dr. Jory’s book and to take away some very important lessons of life, love and relationship.

Reflections on relationships.

I enjoyed reading this book. It is a compilation of stories about several romantic relationships. It cautions each reader to reflect on his or her own love life. While some relationships are wonderful, not all love stories turn out happily ever after. It is both a glimpse of what works and what does not. Some of the relationships worth emulating included trust, good communication, and faithfulness. Relationship traits that led to demise included cheating, not being present, physically or emotionally, and being irresponsible. This book is not all sunshine and roses, but being more aware of how other people struggle, it did make me feel better about my own relationship.

The stories and characters in "Cupid..." are masterfully interwoven, and if anywhere near true, show the raw, down to earth joy and suffering of the inhabitants of Lovejoy, or Anytown, USA. The "message" of Dr. Jory's book, as I see it, is forgiveness. If I step into the shoes of some of the people, forgiveness is not the first thing that comes to my mind. It's the questions in the epilogue that, when I thought about them sufficiently, crystallize the richness of the human experience, and the role we play in each other's life.

This book has such a great story line. It has all of the emotions needed for a wonderful love story. It is a very easy read and easy to understand and comprehend. Just when you think you understand what is going on, the author “throws a curve ball out of left field!” This book really makes you look at your life in a different perspective. What you think would happen, doesn’t, so it opens your eyes to a different point of view. I absolutely loved this story and loved this book!! So happy that I had the opportunity to read this book:)
