"Curb Your Enthusiasm and Philosophy - Awaken the Social Assassin Within" is a collection of thirteen mostly decent yet subdued essays that seek to identify and discuss themes present in the HBO cable TV series of the same name. The TV series revolves around present-day events in the life of its creator, Larry David, who is known by many as a producer of the Seinfeld TV series. The essays herein are easy to read, flow reasonably well, and try really hard to develop and discuss themes present in the series. They have a relaxed, easy-going tone. Many are really not that bad, and a few essays present some cogent observations that apply philosophy dead-on to their theme. Unfortunately, for the most part, these essays lack substance. It's as though their momentum relies more on the humorous situations recalled from the series than on the analytical writing skills of the contributors. I feel that this collection of essays will appeal to fans of CYE, but it will disappoint anyone looking for enlightening or tallmanesque writing. Overall, the writing is somewhat... bald. Not as much there as you'd like to be able to run your fingers through.

Seven sections of essays, one to two essays per section, and an eighth section, with a "Curbology" (a list of words and phrases - "Curb-isms" - made famous in the series), the ever-present brief one-paragraph biographies of the contributors ("Bald and Un-Bald Brothers and Sisters"), and the Index, for a total of 274 pages. How could so many pages fail to offer up any real substance?

The book begins with a Preface that tries to get to the heart of why CYE appeals to viewers.

Any Curb fan will laugh at the show references throughout the book and the pretty, pretty funny ways the contributors break down philosophical concepts which are relevant to a particular scene or theme. Larry's take on the world is actually VERY philosophical. Lots of fun to read.

If, like my, you are a fan of Larry David's work on Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, buy this book! It has put many of the episodes in a new light for me, and the philosophical contextualization is compelling and profound. I can't fault this book in any way!

You'll love this book. Lots of "a-ha" moments as well as "ha-ha" moments. Not so much "waka-waka" as Larry might say, but this was a very clever, well written book. Highly recommend it.
