This is well worth the read and I will be gifting it to people in my life. Give yourself and your kids the gift of reading thru this. Sit with it and really think about what you are reading. You will find it transforming how you look at your life and family and even yourself. Enjoy!
The sweet heart of these authors for you comes out clearly in the text. Just like Jesus, they want to free you from performance anxiety, going it alone, and hopelessness.
The Cure and Parents.
Somewhere near Colorado Springs, I think there is an Evangelical parenting Mount Rushmore. Under the watchful gaze of those granite advice givers, we are given the steps to raising children and creating families. The children will love God, sit quietly in church singing hymns, wearing the modest clothing they have chosen for themselves. Each day will begin with smiles around our breakfast table, in family devotions reinforcing our values. Pastors will laud them and us from the pulpit.
If you are like me, you will eventually think those individuals are not actually raising real humans, or worse yet, that you may not be raising real humans. One day you realize your son prefers crowd surfing while wearing his kilt at a Drop Kick Murphy’s concert to ever darkening the door of a gospel sing. When you have time for breakfast…it’s a raucous event that terrifies the neighbors.
Turns out, maybe we didn’t need so much advice, and we really can’t be perfect…and it’s possible Jesus enjoyed crowd surfing and hanging with badass friends.
This book is a gift from a group of incredible friends at TrueFaced Resources. They’ve written it for all of us, and they are just like us. It’s a wonderful story, written from their hearts.
I hope you’ll pick it up, and while the chaos of the Holidays goes on around you, that you’ll find a few quiet moments to walk in their company.
If you are just beginning your family journey, pick it up, fast, and enjoy the wonderful journey.
There were times when I was reading that I thought the authors had secretly recorded our family decades ago and transcribed it in the book! If only I had known how to practice these simple truths then. I was too wrapped up in "looking" like the perfect mom to my kids and everyone else. Thankfully these principles can still be applied to our current relationships (family and otherwise). It will be more difficult, since we're not in the same house anymore, but I hope to take whatever steps I can to build trust and trust God to heal the relationships that have been damaged.
Thank you to the authors for sharing such practical wisdom!
Having raised our children under the idea that rules and compliance were necessary for them to become healthy functioning responsible citizens we know first hand how devastating this approach can be - we just did not know it and had no language for it. This book not only puts language to the dangers in intergenerational parenting by brute force it washes all the misconceptions about parenting by coercion right down the drain.
Our kids are grown and are now dealing with the result of what we once believed was bring good parents.
Yet the hope herein this book is never too late in coming and is desperately needed by parents in all seasons of life.
