About the Author
As the Vice Chair, co-author and leadership mentor for Leadership Catalyst (LCI) since 1995, Bill’s genuine desire to see relational health in those he works with, has been vital in setting the tone of the organization. His eloquence and integrity have given him opportunities to teach LCI’s principles internationally. His wisdom has been penned throughout the entire series of The Ascent of a Leader, Beyond Your Best, and TrueFaced Experience books.
Prior to joining LCI, Bill founded and pastored the influential church, Open Door Fellowship, for over 20 years. While there, he developed an effective character development training program that nurtured visionaries such as Kit Danly, founder of Neighborhood Ministries in Phoenix, AZ. These training sessions became the basis for the TrueFaced message.
In his spare time, Bill can be found fishing, crafting furniture for his family in his wood shop or cultivating fruits, vegetables and herbs in his beautiful backyard garden. Bill and his wife, Grace have three grown children–– Wende, Bill, and Joy––and nine grandchildren
With degrees in finance law, theology, leadership and organizational development, Bruce’s ability to write on a multitude of topics and to a diverse audience has proved true in the best-sellers he has co-authored: The Ascent of a Leader, TrueFaced and the High Trust Cultures™ and High Trust Leaders™ resources, (formerly, Leading From Strengths and Leading From Within) and the condensation of The Ascent of a Leader, entitled Beyond Your Best.
In addition to presiding over LCI and writing, Bruce’s keen ability to speak into the lives of others, in public arenas, small groups or one-on-one, continues to draw audiences around the world and gives him the opportunity of mentoring leaders in business, government, sports and the church.
Living in Oregon, California, Chicago, and now Arizona, Bruce has gained a variety of interests over the years. He enjoys the beach, reading, sports and observing culture through stand-up comedians, tele-evangelists, urban youth, and politicians. His constant interest is his wife Janet, who is a homemaker, nurse and mentor. Together, they absolutely enjoy their three children, Nicole, Chad and Ryan.
Those books include Leadership Catalyst's second full-length book, TrueFaced. He also serves as the 'Trail Guide' in theTrueFaced Experience DVD, guiding participants through a life-changing small group experience. John also edited Beyond Your Best, a condensation of LCI's first full-length book, The Ascent of a Leader.
Beyond that, John also serves as teaching pastor at Open Door Fellowship in Phoenix, Arizona, a position that he has held since 1985. John was equipped for this ministry at Talbot Seminary and applies the life changing TrueFaced message in this real-world ministry community.
John applied his love for writing and performing as the co-founder and playwright for Sharkey Productions, a theater troupe focused on Gospel-anchored theater productions for those still seeking Christ. John and his wife Stacey have three children Caleb, Amy and Carly.

Everything you already knew, which God has been telling you all along, is confirmed in the words of this book. You are not imagining it when you think to yourself, “the people at church are no doubt nice people, and I know many of them love the Lord and want to help, but something doesn’t seem right because the scripture seems to be saying something other than what they are saying it means.” The confusion comes from GOOD INTENTIONED PEOPLE TRYING TO MIX OLD COVENANT LAW AND NEW COVENANT GRACE, this is the very reason many of the epistles were written! That is the Judaizer religion then spoke and fought against.
Let go of the old covenant law, it was written for the Israelites at the foot of the mountain and no one else. That old covenant was broke and then replaced with God’s new covenant of grace, mercy, love and life by the spirit in and through the person of Jesus Christ and Him in you.
Trust Jesus and rest in his love. Relax and know he is for you and not against you. Have faith in him and not the judaizer religion, rules, laws or regulations that were passed down to you. They won’t save you, but Jesus THE SAVIOR will!
This is a masterpiece of truth, don’t pass it up.
Another couple excellent books to read are “The faith that pleases God - You don’t need to strive for what you already have” and “Classic Christianity.” By Bob George. They say the same thing as The Cure.
Other suggested readings are from authors Bob Christopher and Andrew Farley, “Simple gospel, Simply grace” and “The Naked Gospel” respectively.
There is still plenty in the book to like however. This one is absolutely full of highlighter worthy moments. Some of my favorite quotes from the book:
“No one told me that when I wear a mask, only my mask receives love”.
“Bacterial infections often keep spreading poison until antibiotics are introduced. You can dress nicer and comb your hair all you want, but you’ll only be a well-dressed sick person with nicely combed hair”.
“If I follow the first path, I’m trying to change from who I was into who I should be. If I follow the second, I’m maturing into who I already am. In the first, I’m working toward becoming righteous. In the second, I’m already righteous, made right by God in the moment I believed”.
All in all, I’m a little torn on this book. I thought a lot of it was a slow read, but I also found many strong points in it as well. I do think we take for granted God’s amazing grace and few fully comprehend the transaction that took place through the cross and resurrection – Christ becoming sin and us becoming the righteousness of God. But there is a large contingency out there who are following a “hyper-grace” theology and while this book never dives completely into that camp, it could walk close to that line for those reading it who don’t have a firm biblical foundation. I don’t think this book is for everyone, and I don’t see it as a “must read” like many other reviewers have stated. I do however see value in the book and for some people it could certainly be of strong benefit.

This is a well crafted parable and teaching in parallel.
It is so easy to hide behind the masks of other peoples and our own expectations. Missing the road signs or assuming where our journey should take us has left so many disalusioned in their journey with Jesus, having been misled by well meaning Christian friends and church leaders.
Don't be suprised if you see some of your journey mirrored in the journey of ??? There's odd, I don't recall being told his name!
So brutally honest, straight forward and simple a must for everyone who wants to make sense of life as a Christian in the fast changing and challenging world that we know today.
I also recommend using the workbook for group reading. The series is also supported by online video clips and podcasts which are fantastic also. In summary, don't just buy one, as you will want to give it to your friends.
