The technical dazzle of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a truly astonishing thing to behold: this story of a man who ages backwards requires Brad Pitt to begin life as a tiny elderly man, then blossom into middle age, and finally, wisely, become young. How director David Fincher--with makeup artists, special-effects wizards, and body doubles--achieves this is one of the main sources of fascination in the early reels of the movie. The premise is loosely borrowed from an F. Scott Fitzgerald story (and bears an even stronger resemblance to Andrew Sean Greer's novel The Confessions of Max Tivoli), with young/old Benjamin growing up in New Orleans, meeting the girl of his dreams (Cate Blanchett), and sharing a few blissful years with her until their different aging agendas send them in opposite directions. The love story takes over the second half of the picture, as Eric Roth's script begins to resemble his work on Forrest Gump. This is too bad, because Benjamin's early life is a wonderfully picaresque journey, especially a set of midnight liaisons with a Russian lady (Tilda Swinton) in an atmospheric hotel. Fincher observes all this with an entomologist's eye, cool and exacting, which keeps the material from getting all gooey. Still, the Hurricane Katrina framing story feels put-on, and the movie lets Benjamin slide offscreen during its later stages--curious indeed.--Robert Horton

This is a movie that many reviewers obviously deeply loved, but which others have found unsatisfying. As someone in the latter camp, let me take a stab at helping those who are trying to decide whether to watch this movie which camp they might fall in. Ultimately, I think the viewer's experience will depend on whether she or he most enjoys movies that focus on "being", or those that focus on "becoming". Viewers who derive great enjoyment from sharing a character's experiences of love, pleasure, pain, etc., will find much to like in this film. It's the work of top flight talent. However, viewers who get their pleasure from exploring the deeper effects of a character's unique experiences on his or her development as a person will probably find little to justify this film's nearly 3 hour viewing time. While it's a visually beautiful movie with much to like, in the end I felt it did little to exploit its very interesting premise of the main character's "reverse aging" (being born old and becoming progressively younger throughout his lifespan). The biggest problem for was the lack of central character development throughout the course of the film--the sense that Benjamin was doing more than experiencing and feeling, but was also learning and growing. He was like a travel suitcase that ended up with lots of stickers on the outside marking the interesting places he'd visited, but containing little of substance that he'd picked up along the way. Benjamin remained for me essentially an uninteresting person to whom interesting things happened, and that just wasn't enough for me to lift this into the category of great movies.

This is actually a story within a story. Primarily, it tells an exceptional story of a man born with an unfortunate variation of "projeria", a disease that causes premature aging. In this fictitious variation, the baby is born with features and medical conditions consistent with a 70-year-old man but appears to be aging in reverse. The story is presented in the form of flash-backs from a hand-written diary that a young woman reads to her dying mother. As she reads more of it she begins to suspect that her mother's past is much more intertwined with this unfortunate (or fortunate) man than she first thought. By the time she finishes the diary she learns the truth about her mother's attempts to atone for her selfishness and some life-changing truths about herself. After his mother dies during child birth this unfortunate baby's father, repulsed by his appearance, abandons him on the steps of an "old folks home". A warm-hearted nurse takes pity on him and raises him as her own child right there in the nursing home. Because of his appearance, everyone assumes he is a frail old man. This gets him in trouble when he innocently yearns to play with others his age. He forms a bond with a visiting young girl that is renewed and strengthened later in life. The story follows his life through evermore thrilling and heart-warming adventures as he appears to get increasingly younger, periodically encountering his childhood friend. Folded into the pages of the dusty diary are postcards, photos, and notes that reveal more about how the daughter and her dying mother are connected to the man her mother has kept secret from her all these years... Stellar performances by Brad Pitt (Benjamin Button), Cate Blanchett (Daisy), and Taraji Henson (Queenie). Bravo!!!

All i can really say about this movie. Moving. Inspiring. A huge reminder that life is to short to live in the past. We have to live for the now, in the present. Okay, well what i can say to the non-believer is that they cant deny that Love is God. Love conqours all. Love overcomes fear hands down. So, if you are moved and reminded by this movie, that as a deep connection through experience, memories, happenings that we all have meaning on Earth. I can passionately tell you. I dont know you, but I love you for being you. I want to thank you for that. All i ask in your endeavors is this. Never stop Loving, even in the hardest moments. When you lose a loved one through sickness, illness, cancer; old age, through the passing. Know that the very same love that they have given you. Is eternal, it last forever. Never give up Hope, Faith and Trust for one and another. Time here on earth is indeed temprorary, but Love is eternal, even in Death do us part.

I hadn't really been very interested in watching this for some reason but, eventually, I got around to it. I wish I'd seen it sooner, such a great movie. In many ways it reminded me of Forrest Gump, a compelling human story overlaying decades of history. I think this is more touching on a personal level, you can't help but get completely involved with the characters. Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett and Taraji Henson all put in amazing performances. Even though it's a long movie, at the end I was wishing it would go on longer. I wasn't ready to leave the characters. If you're not sure about this movie go ahead, take the chance and watch it. You won't regret it.

Es gibt nicht wenige Filme, die sind einfach gut gemacht. Die einen aus diesem Grund, die anderen aus einem anderen. Einige wenige Filme dann schaffen es, dass ich sie nicht so schnell vergesse. Dieser Film gehört dazu.

Die Idee zu diesem Film basiert auf einer Kurzgeschichte von Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald. Sie wurde im Mai 1922 in der Zeitschrift Collier's veröffentlicht, verschwand dann nicht wie so vieles, sondern wurde gleich im selben Jahr in der der Sammlung "Tales of the Jazz Age" als Buch veröffentlicht.

Schaut man sich das Original an, dann bemerkt man die Unterschiede zum Film. Die Geschichte spielt 60 Jahre früher und in Baltimore, statt in New Orleans, sie nimmt auch einen vollkommen anderen Verlauf und wird fast beiläufig erzählt, wie ein Bericht über eine Kuriosität, denn das das ist das Leben von Benjamin Button: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Der Film macht mehr aus der Geschichte, geht in die Tiefe und zeigt Dimensionen, die im Buch nicht einmal angedeutet werden. Ein Mensch kommt zur Welt, und sein Leben verläuft rückwärts. Beide Versionen, Kurzgeschichte und Film, kommen nur schwer mit einigen Aspekten dieses Gedankengangs klar. Die Kurzgeschichte versucht es erst gar nicht. Hier taucht ein Greis in voller Lebensgröße auf, von der Mutter ist anschließend nicht mehr die Rede.

Im Film stirbt die Mutter und der entsetzte Vater setzt das Neugeborene auf den Treppen eines Altersheims auf. Eine Idee, die anschließend tatsächlich funktioniert. Sein Körper hat alle Anzeichen eines Lebens kurz vor dem Ende, sein Geist zeigt Demenz. Benjamin wird jünger, geht mit 17 Lebensjahren, als seine körperliche Verfassung es erlaubt, hinaus in das Leben, geht zur See, verlässt seine Kinder- und Jugendfreundin, die zur weltweit gefeierten Tänzerin wird. Und dann, beide sind schon Anfang 40 und in der Mitte ihres Lebens, treffen sich ihre Wege wieder und es kommt zu einer überaus berührenden Liebesgeschichte. Sie erleben eine faszinierende Zeit, Ihre Tochter kommt zur Welt und eine Entscheidung wird fällig ...

Der Film kommt recht unaufgeregt daher, dauert fast drei Stunden und arbeitet sich Schritt für Schritt auf die Unausweichlichkeiten eines Menschenlebens hin, das in einem Körper abläuft, der gegen die Lebensentwicklung aller Anderen nicht altert, sondern immer jünger wird. Rahmen ist ein fiktives Tagebuch von Benjamin, vorgelesen von seiner Tochter am Sterbebett der Mutter. Eine interessante Idee, mit entschieden mehr Fantasie und Tiefgang umgesetzt als das Original des berühmten Schriftstellers.

J’aime inégalement les films de David Fincher. J’ai une grande admiration pour Zodiac (2007), pour moi une très grande réussite à tous les niveaux, et le film de lui que je préfère – je précise que je n’ai pour ma part pas encore vu Mank (2020). Cependant, j’ai la plus grande tendresse pour son film suivant, The Strange Case of Benjamin Button / L’Etrange Histoire de Benjamin Button (2008).

Eric Roth est ce scénariste qui avait déjà de la bouteille mais est devenu beaucoup plus célèbre avec son script pour Forrest Gump (1994). Les années 2000 ont été particulièrement riches pour lui, de ses deux collaborations avec Michael Mann – The Insider / Révélations (1999) et Ali (2001) – à Benjamin Button en passant par le Munich de Steven Spielberg (2006) et The Good Shepherd / Raisons d’Etat de Robert de Niro (2007).

On a souvent dit qu’avec cette adaptation de la courte nouvelle de F. Scott Fitzgerald, le scénariste de Forrest Gump revenait là à ce qui avait fait son succès. Oui et non. Certes, The Strange Case of Benjamin Button semble livrer en chemin quelques perles de sagesse sur le rapport à la vie, au passage du temps et à la perte. Mais le personnage, bien que lui aussi jetant un regard innocent sur le monde, n’est vraiment pas identique, et le film non plus. La touche Fincher, pourtant on ne plus modeste et tout à sa volonté de respecter la matière du scénario d’Eric Roth, fait également la différence.

On peut – et c’est mon cas – ne pas du tout rechigner à être (très) ému par un tel récit. On peut aussi apprécier que l’innocence du personnage ne soit pas l’occasion de faire preuve de mignardise, et que le pathos ne soit jamais étalé en couche. A un moment de son commentaire audio, Fincher parle du regard d’une actrice en expliquant qu’il exprime exactement ce qui était requis et sait dans le même temps rester ‘understated’ – ‘I like understatement’, ajoute-t-il. La grande réussite de ce film est pour moi qu’il n’hésite pas à jouer le grand romanesque, et que l’on sent son auteur prêt à aller dans le sens de ce romanesque un peu flamboyant, tout en suivant sa pente naturelle et en sachant faire preuve d’’understatement’ quand il le faut. La fin, que beaucoup ont trouvé trop rapide, voire bâclée, est dans cette perspective exactement ce qu’elle doit être : elle affecte, mais sur un mode retenu, ‘understated’ lui aussi.

L’autre grande qualité de ce film selon moi, qui va dans le sens de ce goût du romanesque qui caractérise aussi bien son scénariste que son metteur en scène, c’est l’incroyable plaisir de raconter des histoires dont il se nourrit. Ceux qui ne l’aiment pas beaucoup lui reprochent d’ailleurs, au moins en partie, d’aligner des micro-récits. Ce type de récit, très courant dans le roman (américain, mais anglais avant lui, et plus largement européen), vise à trouver une unité dans la diversité des récits miniatures qu’il place les uns à la suite des autres. Dans The Strange Case of Benjamin Button – et pourquoi ne pas avoir traduit littéralement ? – c’est l’étrange histoire de Benjamin qui importe, mais aussi les étranges histoires qui parsèment son parcours. Chacun aura ses préférées – j’adore pour ma part celle avec le personnage de Tilda Swinton, remarquable comme à son habitude, et ce d’autant plus qu’elle n’a que quelques minutes de présence à l’écran mais qu’elle fait exister son personnage d’entrée de jeu ; quand bien même on aimerait parfois que certaines soient plus développées, il me semble que la volonté de raconter le film comme cela est entièrement à mettre au crédit d’Eric Roth, qu’il a fait le bon choix. On a pu lui reprocher de gonfler inutilement la nouvelle de Fitzgerald. Il est évident qu’il a fait tout autre chose que d’adapter fidèlement la nouvelle – et la « trahison » porte d’ailleurs également sur le sens de l’histoire racontée, avec quelque ironie, par le romancier – mais je trouve pour ma part que cette infidélité aura produit un bel enfant, sous la forme d’une belle histoire portant en elle une multitude d’histoires elles-mêmes riches de potentialités. Fincher parle de la première histoire miniature – celle de l’horloge de la gare et de son concepteur Monsieur Gâteau - en expliquant qu’Eric Roth y tenait mais qu’il semblait à tous autour de lui qu’elle entretenait un rapport trop lâche avec l’histoire du personnage titre pour qu’on envisage de la retenir. C’est là que l’on se dit qu’il est bon que de temps à autre les cinéastes puissent en faire à leur tête et ne pas écouter tous ceux qui semblent savoir alors qu’ils n’ont pas la moindre idée du fait que les liens créés au sein d’une œuvre ne doivent pas tous être immédiatement évidents pour tous comme autant de gros câbles : ce sont bien eux qui enrichissent l’œuvre au bout du compte. Heureusement, Roth et Fincher ont ramé dans le même sens : si Benjamin Button n’est pas une œuvre philosophiquement sans fond, tout au moins a-t-elle cette profusion de récits qui la nourrit et la rend plus riche. Il me semble qu’ils ont eu raison de la concevoir ainsi et d’avoir imposé une telle profusion, en nouant certains liens clairement – parfois un peu trop, d’ailleurs, ou de façon un peu trop illustrative – mais en ne le faisant pas pour tous, tout le temps.

Harris Savides, le très remarquable chef opérateur de Zodiac, n’a pas rempilé pour le film suivant de Fincher. A en juger par ce qu’a fait Claudio Miranda, il est aisé de constater tout ce que l’image de ses films doit également à son metteur en scène. Alexandre Desplat a produit une musique totalement typique de sa production, mais aussi totalement adéquate et sans doute une de ses plus constamment inspirées. Chaque second rôle est tenu à la perfection, et que l’on aime ces acteurs dans tous leurs films ou non, il me semble évident que l’on ne peut guère faire de reproches à Brad Pitt et Cate Blanchett, sans doute là au sommet de leur talent (et pas seulement de leur ‘star power’). Une fois oubliée la ‘performance’ – jouer après avoir passé des heures au maquillage ou avec l’aide de techniques numériques élaborées – il reste un jeu d’une grande finesse, souvent ‘understated’, qui n’est pas pour rien dans le fait que l’on embrasse pleinement ces personnages et que l’on se laisse toucher profondément par leur évolution. Brad Pitt a depuis prouvé à plusieurs reprises – chez Terrence Malick, et plus récemment chez Quentin Tarantino ou James Gray – qu’il est bien un acteur remarquable, mais à chaque fois que j’ai quelques doutes relativement à l’ampleur de son talent, je me rappelle Benjamin Button, dans lequel il me semble avoir livré une prestation exceptionnelle.

EDITION DOUBLE BLU-RAY AMERICAINE PARAMOUNT CRITERION (2009) / EUROPEENNE WARNER BROS (2009)

Je détiens pour ma part l’édition américaine Criterion, mais attention : elle est réservée à ceux qui peuvent lire les blu-rays zone A. Pour ceux qui le peuvent, il faut savoir qu’elle est encore un peu meilleure que l’édition européenne Warner, même si celle-ci se distingue elle aussi par sa grande qualité d’ensemble. L’édition américaine propose, tout autant que l’édition française, une piste sonore et des sous-titres en français. Elle offre en outre un petit livret, moins fourni qu’à l’accoutumée chez Criterion mais avec un essai de Kent Jones qui vaut la lecture.

En blu-ray, le film est restitué à la quasi-perfection, aussi bien sur le versant de l’image que sur celui du son. Les noirs, les ocres - si importants chez Fincher, et en particulier dans ce film-ci – passent remarquablement bien.

Les suppléments sont si nombreux dans les deux éditions qu’il serait fastidieux de tous les lister. Evidemment pour un tel film les aspects techniques sont particulièrement développés, et ceux qui s’intéressent à la fabrique d’un film seront ravis. Le commentaire audio de Fincher est à ne pas rater : il fait partie de ces cinéastes qui savent parler de ce qu’ils ont souhaité et fait. Sans doute rechigne-t-il comme beaucoup à éclairer le sens, mais il en dit assez pour que nombre de ses remarques jettent quelque lumière sur ce qu’il a souhaité exprimer et comment.
