This is a great story about Sir Richard Francis Burton and his assistant Algernon Charles Swinburne
Set in the Victorian period Burton is an explorer whose biggest quest was the find the headwaters of the Nile. Which he never accomplished due to a case of Malaria which still attacks him on a regular basis.
Burton is summoned by the King and becomes his agent to deal with affairs that are best kept from the public's eye or are so far out of reality as to defeat conventional policing work.
Swinburne is at the other end of at the clear headed thinking in that he is usually drunk and a womanizer of epic proportions. Somehow these two opposites fill in what the other is missing when working on cases.
This story indeed involves a clockwork man, mediumistic influence, black diamonds that fell to Earth ages ago, a crazy Russian ruler from the future, ectoplasm, possession, false claims against a large estate.
The story arc runs along at a break neck speed and there is impending peril at every turn. Both main characters are fully developed and are immediately relatable
The use of steam powered transportation and automatons are pervasive in the book. Time travel also enjoys a minor part in the book.
This is a very well defined Steampunk novel with a compelling and exciting story arc. Recommended along with Hodder's first book "The Strange Affair of Spring Healed Jack".

Editorial Reviews
Review
Praise for the Philip K. Dick Award-winning Burton & Swinburne books:
"The usual superlatives for really clever fantasy (imaginative, mind-bending, phantasmagorical) aren't nearly big enough for this debut novel. With this one book, Hodder has put himself on the genre map."
-Booklist, starred review of The Strange Affair of Spring-Heeled Jack
"Hodder, with an encyclopedic grasp of period detail, tellingly brings these disparate, oddly familiar yet eerily different worlds to fecund life. Enthralling, dizzying, and as impressive as they come."
-Kirkus Reviews, starred review
"Every once in a while I come across a book, or series of books, that totally yanks the carpet out from under me. Then it reaches out, smashes me in the face with its awesomeness, and says, 'You love me!' Leaving me with naught to do but obligingly respond, 'Yes. Yes I do.' [The Curious Case of the Clockwork Man] was every bit the book that I had hoped it would be."
-Elitist Book Reviews
"Whatever one chooses to call [The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack], it would be very difficult to deny its overwhelming brilliance. I can't remember the last time a novel has surprised, awed, and enthused me so utterly that I'm almost left at a loss for words for how to recommend it."

Yes it's true this novel is even better than Hodder's first installation "The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack." Although both books combine the elements of steampunk, time-travel, and mystery, this one was more of a page turner than the first. Back to solve the mystery are Sir Richard Burton and the poet Algernon Swinburne. An unlikely pair but in Hodder's hands they become fun and fascinating to follow. This novel starts us off with action and makes us feel as though the main characters are old friends.
It all begins when a clockwork man is found in the park. As Burton and Swinburne investigate it dawns on Burton that this is just a rouse to keep the police occuppied while somethning else goes on. It turns out that something else is a robbery of diamonds but, of course, it turns out to be much, much more. Next Burton and Swinburne find themselves wrapped up with ghosts, zombies, treasure hunts, family curses and time paradoxes. This is an exciting novel to read with never a dull moment.
Burton is also concerned in this novel with the alternative timeline he is living in. He knows the Victorian period he is in is not the one as it should be but does not know how to fix it. All the while Burton is having flashbacks to his time in Africa. Meanwhile Swinburne, his trusty sidekick, becomes more well rounded in this novel. He actually helps solve the crime and is terribly funny in parts.
Did I mention other real historical characters play a part in this novel? First there's Charles Altamont Doyle, Father of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Next there's Oscar Wilde, albeit a child, but his wit is still very much there. And finally there's Florence Nighingale who ends up helping Burton in the end. If all this isn't enough to get you to read this novel, then I don't know what is.
Highly recommended!

I'd read and enjoyed Mark Hodders first novel, The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack and was curious to see if his second would be as good. He didn't disappoint.
The Curious Case of the Clockwork Man continues in "Steampunk Victoriana" with the escapades of Sir Richard Francis Burton, his assistant Algernon Charles Swinburne and few of the other characters from Spring Heeled Jack.
The adventures and action are all equal to the "ripping yarns" used in the first novel but he seems to have found his pace in this second book. The characters seem to have a little more gravitas and the pace of the story flows a lot smoother. The attention to detail, descriptions of the new technologies and inventions bring the imagined London into a full colour visualization.
The disruption of history caused by the misadventures in Spring Heeled Jack are discussed in this book and have relevance to the direction of other European governments, with arms races and industrial espionage.
There will no doubt be a third novel in this series, as was hinted towards the end of this book - I'm looking forward to more adventures from Burton & Swinburne.

After reading the first book, Burton & Swinburne Spring-heeled Jack, I continued the journey with this volume. I was very entertained and liked the steam-punk world/alt universe "Victorian" era. I think one should read the first book before starting this one for a few references will not make sense. Here, technological innovation meets with eugenists (using bio tech) and now, seances and "wraith" via astro projection- another obsession from the 19th century here brought to life. a few chapters needs work, but overall, very nice crazy yarn...zombies, steambots, babbage calculators, rotorships, and cussing message parrots will suck you right into this charming world. you should also read The Devil Drives...a bio of sir Richard Burton and by comparing the characters, Hodder's Burton is not far off from the real deal. Well done.

I wanted to like this book more. I love steampunk and had waded my way through his first book in this series, the Spring Heeled Jack book. But like the first book, I found this book a bit tedious. It's hard to put my finger on why that is. I think it might be a big overwritten. It just seems to go on and on with one convoluted caper after another. But it's just a bit wordy, again like the first book was. By the end of this book I just didn't really care about where all the twists and turns were leading.

Good Follow Up

This will make much more sense if you've already read the first Burton and Swinburne book as it launches straight into a new adventure with the pair. A slightly less involving story to start with but it does pick up as it gets going. Fans of the series will be interested in some of the new and very strange inventions that the alternate time has brought to what should be Victorian London. Lots of detail from the period and Mark Hodder adds well known real Victorians to the mix as well. A good book for fans of the series although maybe not as good as the first.

Burton and Swinburne investigate...

This second book was just as enjoyable for me as the first
Burton and Swinburne in the Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack (Burton & Swinburne)
although it didn't have the iconic spring heeled jack that hooked my interest in the first place it did have a nice Holmes and Watson feel to the first part of the adventure, particularly Hound of the Baskervilles. However I had read a biography of Burton
Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton: A Biography
beforehand and this gave me a much deeper appreciation of how well researched the main characters were. I had no idea that Burton and Swinburne were friends in real life, I thought it just the inventiveness of the author to put two such odd characters together. While thoroughly enjoyable in it's own right with a great twist at the end and the introduction of legendary characters it just whetted my appetite for the final installment which I was really looking forward to

Curiously Unbelievable.

Both a wonderful romp and curiously over the top! Rather spoilt by its somewhat excessive length and gory body count.
The author is a knowledgable, hugely enthusiastic writer who would be well advised to keep a blue pencil to hand and to score out swathes of otiose and over - descriptive writing, as it appears on his steam typewriter in future.
I enjoyed much of the book, but it could have been so much better had it been more disciplined.
By the way, I may have missed something, but quite what was Battersea Power Station manufacturing?

Curiouser and Curiouser!

The first Burton and Swinburne novel, The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack, deserves all the kudos already heaped upon it, and this is a worthy successor, blending steampunk, sci-fi and fantasy with fine characterisation and first-rate storytelling. It's a proper penny dreadful and a page-turner into the bargain!
