If you’re a scientist, engineer, or even just a curious layperson who reads the occasional article about healthcare, AI or data science, you’ll probably have encountered references to “Bayes’ Theorem”. You might also have a fuzzy understanding of it, or otherwise wonder what all the fuss is about. Gordon Webster’s The Curious Zombie’s Guide to Bayes Theorem is a good place to sharpen that understanding and appreciate the importance of Bayesian thinking to our modern world.
It packs a lot into a small volume, eight short chapters covers the evaluation of medical test results, loaded dice, spam filters and blood test matching in crime scenes. What I liked about this book is that Webster presents fully-worked examples with realistic numbers in a very chatty, and intuitive way. It’s not a dry textbook, but a quick primer on how to get yourself up and running with your own back-of-the-envelope Bayesian calculations.
