This is a book of gems from an extraordinary talented and entertaining writer. Robinson's essays take the hammer to several variations of an ever more popular kind of non-critical/reactionary thinker gaining currency in our bizarre cultural climate (Harris, Peterson, Shapiro, etc.). Rules for Life contains some of the most rigorous and demystifying writing on, among other things, different popular intellectuals and their indignant and apprehensive defenses of the status quo. Occasionally acerbic and often optimistic, Robinson exposes these thinkers' public and published attempts at bravura as lacking both rigor and substance, e.g. the sometimes unethical and disturbing implicit—often explicit—defense, even championing, of dominance, aggression, exceptionalism, and greed; the gaslighting of many marginalized individuals; and the employment of the "irrefutable" 3-card-trick that is the naturalist fallacy, masked by a kind of facile or vulgar positivism. Robinson's writing is approachable without sacrificing precision, and I also laughed a lot!

I very much appreciate this book, although much of the book is a compilation of articles written for the magazine itself, Current Affairs. "Rules for Life: On Social Justice & Its Critics" is a very solid analysis of prominent right wing critics of the left (and when I say left, I mean center left and beyond) and their arguments. Not only does Nathan J. Robinson, along with contributors of Current Affairs, give these analyses, but also detail out the way leftists think, the principles of the left and even some critiques of some leftist positions and policies that are not constructive.
Reading this book also expands the intellectual horizon of anyone reading it, providing counter examples, be they practical, hypothetical, or otherwise, to the ones posed by Right Wing intellectuals such as Jordan Peterson or Sam Harris. Robinson also distinguishes the caricature of the left created by people on the right, and actual leftists with strong arguments that are the real marginalized and suppressed voices in America. He brings those people to the fore and provides many left wing intellectuals and their works that should be analysed in the hope that people will engage with the strongest arguments provided by the left, and not just some "tyrannical left wing college students".

Nathan J. Robinson is a very thoughtful, clear writer who lays out very good arguments for how to engage with the bad faith actions and words of many people on the right. Rather than being reactionary, he lays out a clear set of guidelines for what to focus on and how to advance progressive thought and causes. Highly recommend this no matter what side of the spectrum you are on.

Nathan J. Robinson is the William F. Buckley of the rational left (albeit less patrician and more empathetic) serving up a clear writing counterforce to the fear, scarcity and logical fallacies of the right wing social media blogosphere.
