When Rob Rains writes a book on baseball I'm always interested because of his knowledge of the game and the National League. So when I saw this book and it was about the Cubs, of course I'm going to read it. When I started reading it and it turned out to be far more than just another baseball book, but a mystery! I kept going back and looking at the cover to make sure I had the right book. Once I realized this I dug in. Could not put this down! What a great story with twist and turns that even a poor Cub fan who thinks they've seen it all could not imagine what's in store in this book. Fun book, fast read GREAT story!!!!!

WOW Rob a whole other side of your writing that I would love to see more of! Try writing a mystery thriller completely outside of baseball, this was that good! You do not have to be a baseball fan to love this book!

Andy Van Slyke was a terrific ballplayer in his day; known as much for his irreverent and spontaneous sense of humor as his remarkable "Gold Glove" defensive skills in centerfield; he was a fan and sportswriter's favorite throughout his 13 year major league career. His partner in crime for this particular book - Rob Rains - is a very gifted writer who also happens to be the most prolific author of Cardinal baseball history - and the men who made Redbird history - since Bob Broeg's engaging stories, dating back well over a half century ago.

Together, these guys really know baseball; and they know how to concoct a great piece of fictional folklore about one of baseball's most storied - and frustrating - franchises in history: The Chicago Cubs.

Anyone who follows baseball with any degree of regularity is quite familiar with the last century of Chicago Cubs agony - from the Billygoat Curse of 1945, to the shocking Meltdown of 1969, to the Great Postseason Collapse of 1984, to the recent torment of poor Steve Bartman in 2003; if something can go wrong with the Cubbies, it always does.

After back to back Central Division titles in 2007 & 2008, the Cubs were eliminated in stunning fashion both years; swept by the Diamondbacks & Dodgers, respectively, in the very first round of the playoffs. Of course, it seemed like they were The Team of Destiny in '08 - the 100th anniversary of their last World Series championship, while entering the post season with the National League's best regular season record (97 - 64). How could they possibly be denied? Come on; these are the Cubs!

Thanks to the magic of Facebook, I recently became aware of this particular book, ordered it right here on Amazon, received it earlier today, and polished it off in one sitting.

Doc Holliday's Road to Tombstone: The Life and Times of John Henry HollidayTungee's Gold: The Legend of Ebo Landing

The Curse by Andy Van Slyke and Rob Rains.
You don't need to be a Cubs fan or even a baseball fan to enjoy this mystery.
You get a sense early on that Cubs owner Tony Vitello might have something to hide. Apparently his first wife went for a late night swim off of their yacht and drowned. The husband was questioned and investigated but never indited.
But unanswered questions or no, this might be the Cubs season, they were flying high and leading their division by five games, next stop Los Angeles and a series with the Dodgers.
The players had boarded the plane at O'Hare and were about to settle into their seats when a black limousine pulled up to the plane. Owner Tony Vitello got out of the limo and boarded the plane. Almost immediately the doors were closed and the 737 was secured to leave the ramp.
The plane took off and climbed to a crusing altitude of 35,000 feet. About an hour into the flight a boost pump warning light flashed on the panel in front of the copilot. The pilots quickly went through their check list as the trouble went from bad to worse. The engines were apparently starving for fuel. The copilot called Denver when it was determined that they had to get the plane on the ground. Cheyenne was nearest and they turned toward the airport with Denver's blessings.
The crew was as good as they come but when both engines quit all thy could do was try and manhandle the heavy glider and direct it to a Cheyenne runway.
