A man us dead, and the scene is set to make it look like a statue of an ancient Goddess has killed him. With both Jason Dark and Sherlock Holmes on the scene, it is not long before the mystery appears to be solved. Or is it? Holmes concludes it is an open and shut case of murder, but as Jason Dark digs a little more, it is clear this crime has a supernatural element. So, the question is, who is behind it, and why?

I was so excited to learn that Sherlock Holmes would be making an appearance in this Jason Dark book. His arrival has long been hinted at, throughout the series, and I am happy to not only see it happen, but to see the interesting twist Henkel put on the interaction of the two investigators. I personally liked seeing Holmes being trumped by Dark.

The story in this novella, like all of the Jason Dark novellas, is a fresh, unique look at what can be scary. Henkel skillfully combines the Victorian gothic setting with universal horrors to make for stories that still are frightening to modern readers, but also appeal to those who like classic horror. I personally found this to be one of the spookier stories, since the idea of a murderous statue would never have occurred to me, thereby making it a new terror.

Now that we are quite a few books into the series, Henkel is able to weave bits of the histories of past tales into the book, while also hinting at what may come in the future. I find this to be incredibly engaging as a reader (and it makes me want to go re-read all the past novellas), yet it is done in a way that should someone choose this book as their first foray into Jason Dark, they would not be confused. That is the sign of a skillful writer in my opinion.

So, my question for you is, why are you still reading my review, when you could be reading this fantastic book?

I received a review copy of the book courtesy of the author.

Henkel gives us another great Jason Dark short story. Inspector Lestrade calls in two detectives, Sherlock Holmes and Jason Dark, to investigate the murder of John Balderston. But, the murder is not as elementary as Holmes might believe.

This time Dark battles with a foe (or is that two?) from his past.

I liked the introduction of Holmes into the story, but I would liked to have seen more of him. I really expected (hoped for) a twist at the end with Holmes included. Lestrade was given a good part of the story and I enjoyed every minute of it.

While the villains are from earlier stories, I had no trouble keeping up with this novella. This is the tenth novella of the series, but all of the stories, that I have read, stand alone.

Another great effort by Henkel, I give it 5 Jiang Shi vampires out of 5.

Curse of Kali: A Jason Dark Supernatural Mystery by Guido Henkel is another very enjoyable novella about the 19th century London ghost and demon battling detective and his strikingly beautiful partner, Siu Lin. This mystery has Jason and Siu Lin working with a very pompous Sherlock Holmes, and his sidekick Dr. Watson, to help Inspector Lestrade solve the beheading of John Balderston in his large aristocratic London home. Holmes quickly declares that there was nothing supernatural about the murder and identifies the murderer. However, Jason Dark, Siu Lin, and Inspector Lestrade take another look at the Balderston house later that night and find themselves under attack by murderous supernatural entities. This is the ninth novella in this series that I have read and I recommend all of them to readers who like supernatural mysteries. I like the nineteenth-century-London setting of these novellas. I like the occasional inclusion of other well-known nineteenth-century characters like Sherlock Holmes. I particularly like the engaging characters of Jason Dark and Siu Lin and the creative stories that Mr. Henkel crafts in these novellas. What could be more enticing than a detective team that pursues supernatural villains and monsters in nineteenth-century London.

I absolutely love the Jason Dark books. I've become a fan of Guido Henkel. I wish the Curse of Kali was a little bit longer. Although, I'm not quite sure if the book was short or it just kept my attention that I read it in one sitting.
