It’s the story of a family struggling with emotional loss and financial ruin after the death of the father. New to the responsibility put on his young shoulders, ten-year-old Yrion Blight stands in a cemetery where his father’s gravestone, “the whitest of the stones” rests among those of his grandfathers and great-grandfathers. As drifting fog settles in around him, a massive, riderless horse steps out of the mist. The mystery of that horse and where it takes Yrion is woven throughout rest of the book.
We also meet Yrion’s sister, Laurel, a young woman determined to set her own path in a world that is just as determined to set it for her. The author makes us feel the confusion that comes with her dawning maturity, her frustration when her plans are thwarted and her ability to adapt to facts as they appear.
I expect to read more from this author as he continues to hone his story telling chops and further develops his already solid ability to bring his characters to life.
It was so interesting to see Yrion and Laurel's journeys towards realizing who they were and what they wanted out of life.
This seemed like a mixed genre type of book. If you enjoy action and romance I think this is a good choice for you.
