The protagonist does not belong to the boring, annoying ranks of youthful perfection that are especially common in this genre. The middle aged Elzetta Swan is mature and not too critical of her backwater upbringing even if it did damage her self confidence - a little. She's spunky, adorable and sensible. and I want to be her friend. Modern fiction is starved for female roles are multi faceted, imperfect and relatable. This is just as true for action stories as "magic" stories, and Ms. Fisher delivered this in bulk with Elzetta Swan. Brava.
Let's see, some more things that I loved. The interactions between her and the Captain are sweet, sexy and more importantly, not cringe worthy. The villain, while not particularly evil or scary, was well handled. And I really love the way the author explained the "magic" part of it in a plausible way - that was biggie for me. I never once rolled my eyes which usually happens all. the. time.
Ms Fisher's sharp witty style had me giggling regularly. "One minute she was haughty and the next she was a garden party hostess overdosed on tranquilizers." She's a hoot.
This is not a story with crazy thrilling plot twists or soaring action, but if you're looking for fantastic characters and an engaging story with smart, snappy writing, this book's for you. No matter what your genre is.
The best part for me besides the undeniable chemistry between Elzetta and Caleb McGrath was the often understated humor that was sprinkled liberally throughout. Elzetta is a strong, independent-minded woman with a lot of compassion for others. This was a fun read that fully captured my imagination!
This book was given to me in exchange for my honest review.
