The idea for this book, literally, came to me in a dream. I was anxious to write a horror story since I’ve long admired Stephen King’s work and wanted to challenge myself. Once I got the idea, I put aside a dystopian science fiction book I was writing and devoted myself to this project. But I have to confess, while it started out as a macabre tale, it morphed into something else. I quickly strayed from the standard horror genre. I was intrigued by the Salem witch trials, which were supposed to be the basis for this story. But the more I looked into it, the more I became fascinated by the political, sociological, and religious factors that gave rise to the hysteria. Colonial America was gripped by witchcraft, as was much of the known world, during the 17th century. It proved far more intriguing to me than simple hocus-pocus and spells, although they’re still part of the story. I wasn’t satisfied stopping there, however. I wanted tell a parallel story projected into the future with a modern interpretation in a contemporary setting. So, roughly half of this book is historical. It focuses on a fictional New England fishing village, Northam Bay, and its early inhabitants, who battle their own demons. The other half takes place in the same village with a modern twist. Fear and prejudice still exist, but the demons are far different: Suburbanization, gentrification, old-school politics, and a culture clash among the modern inhabitants. Keith Girard has 35 years of experience as a reporter, editor-in-chief, senior media executive and most recently novelist.

His career began in Washington, D.C. He worked there as reporter and editor for 18 years, starting out as a reporter/intern in the Washington bureau of South Carolina’s leading newspaper The State. He witnessed firsthand and wrote about the unfolding Watergate scandal in 1974.

He became a reporter for The Washington Post in 1984. In his reporting career he covered such stories as the Invasion of Grenada, the Nicaraguan civil war, how U.S. companies provided Saddam Hussein with the poison gas, the Reagan-era financial meltdown, the BCCI scandal and Operation Desert Storm.

In 1992, he became editor-in-chief of The Daily Record in Maryland. He was also editor-in-chief of InvestmentNews and Billboard magazine in New York City.

Keith has won nearly two dozen journalism awards for feature writing, general reporting, investigative reporting, editorials, headlines, and publication design. He has written one book, on the role of the Marines in Operation Desert Shield/Storm. In 1982, he was named one of the 100 future leaders of Washington, D.C., by Washingtonian magazine.

He has a keen interest in history, science fiction, horror and politics. One of his books may combine all three.

A great blend of history and contemporary issues linked by a curse that befell a small New England fishing village in the 17th century. This book is told in two parts, one set in the 17th century and the other in contemporary America. Yet, they are bound inextricably by social and political issues that transcend time, even if they manifest themselves in different ways. It's a haunting story of families struggling to adapt to a new world in one case and a new home in the other. Underlying it all is a mystery driven by tales of witchcraft borne out of the hysteria of the Salem witch trials in 1692. The tragic events in colonial Massachustts have repercussions across generations to the present day and form the backdrop to a story of money, power, greed and God. It's a compelling read that will draw you in with characters that are real and empathetic, even if they are, in come cases, evil. The book questions our beliefs and shows the power of superstition, misinformation, misdirected blame, fear, and most of all religious fanaticism. If this sounds a lot like today's society, this book is a must read.

It's amazing how a single person can instigate a witch hunt--literally or metaphorically against an individual or a group. It's almost always based on misinformation, misdirected blame and fear, and most of all religious fanaticism. Unfortunately, it is still as true today as in the 1700's and before that. This was one of those books that as soon as I finished it, I missed it! I recommend this to anyone, even if you don't think it is going to be your kind of thing!
