CURT specialty ball mounts are a group of exceptional towing products, built to succeed where others fear to tread. From the back roads of overrun forests to the muddy fields of small town farms, towing looks a little different, and that means different demands on your towing equipment. CURT offers a full lineup of unique ball mounts that are made to tackle the rougher side of towing while still being able to fit a standard 2" x 2" receiver tube.Like a tow hook, this CURT tow strap mount offers a solid attachment point for the CURT vehicle recovery strap #83066 or similar tow strap. It is made with a solid steel shank and has a steel shackle for increased tow strap security. It comes with a durable powder coat finish and is limited to the weight capacity of the trailer hitch.

Both USA made-if nothing else means the ratings can be trusted.
CM M652P Super Strong Anchor Shackle with Orange Powder Coated Screw Pin, 6-1/2 Ton Work Load Limit, 3/4" Size
Curt for some reason doesn't rate or stamp other than 'don't exceed hitch cap. etc' so I assume the mount is at least equal to the shackle.
Most other tow strap mounts include a 3/4" shackle but only rated at 4 3/4 ton. Recovery gear isn't the place to skimp but it costs.
If your buying earrings to hang on your rig & its all about paint and looks, no reason to spring for this. If its something your going to use worth the extra cost for quality.
Just an add- the hole for shackle pin is 1"+ so could run 7/8" shackle or what ever with 1"ø pin if needed.
Distance from 5/8" (.65) hitch pin hole (center) to back of mount is 2 1/2", hitch hole to shackle hole 4 1/4", hitch hole to face 5 3/4". OAL of 8 1/4"
width of mount tongue 1 3/16", (shackle opening is about 1 1/4". Total weight is ~9 1/2#
The only thing I didn't like was the square corners on mount nose so ground a 3/8" radius. (Oh no- scratched my powder coating!)
I added second hitch pin hole in front of existing hole, though shackle rated for side load, rotating 90° shortens leverage of pivot point on hitch 2", no extra load on shackle. There is offered a similar mount that uses CM shackle w/full radius nose, 90° hitch holes though holes are on same plane, but its shorter.
Some said that their shackles were very tight fitting on the end of the draw bar. Mine has a build date of 1/15 and the shackle fits easily, with about 1/8" on either side to spare.
I always wondered why people would buy these instead of just shoving the tow strap in the trailer hitch. Well, it makes it a lot easier if you need to hook a snatch block, or a tree saver, or if your strap has wide ends that won't fit in a hitch to begin with. And if you're in the mud/water/sand/snow and the hitch is below the surface, you'll be looking at these the first time you have to loop a strap by feel alone.
This Curt unit is well made, nicely finished in machining and paint, and absolutely, positively stout. I have no reason to believe that this will not live up to its reputation and deliver a lifetime of service. Yes, it's expensive (twice the price of the Smittybilt), but you get what you pay for. I love to purchase something and feel that I got great value in the purchase...
Definitely, five stars.
I gave this four stars because the shackle (made in USA by Columbus McKinnon ... an excellent shackle manufacturer) was forged (important for strength) which left some kind of a "seam" which I had to grind down a bit so that it would slide over the mount fairly easily. When I received this mount, I had to wrestle to get the shackle off the mount ... it was too tight. I only grinded just enough so that the shackle mates snugly with the mount.
Overall, this is a very nice quality USA piece. I would definitely buy another one without a question.
This receiver was great. I didn't have to worry once about anything happening when I had to pull a buddy out from some mud. My only issue I had with it, was the shackle was too snug. I had to use a mallet to knock it off to attach the strap. I am going to look into finding another shackle to fit this, and use the one that it came with as a backup.
UPDATE: few years later and still going strong. Was stopped at a red light last night and got rear ended by a honda accord close to 30mph. they went straight into the hitch. damage to my jeep? none. just a little residue of her paint on the hitch. Honda on the other hand was all mangled up. bumper, hood, radiator, probably even more, all destroyed. This thing is solid and well worth the money.
