Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2—A girl runs away to the forest and eventually collapses in tears at the foot of a curvy tree. The tree asks the girl why she is crying, and she tells him that the other children in her village are mean to her despite her kindness. They mock her appearance, glasses, speech, and intelligence. In an effort to cheer her up, the tree tells her his own history. Once the other trees teased him for being different, but when loggers came to the forest, they cut down all of the other trees. Being different saved the curvy tree. He was lonely but eventually grew tall enough that he could see other curvy trees in distant forests. From his branches, the girl sees the other trees, and in each one there is a child like her. The tree teaches her that life will improve as she grows and looks outward. The digital artwork is romanticized, befitting the story's tone, but the message is a bit over-the-top and saccharine. VERDICT The well-intentioned story is held back by awkward phrasing and cloying illustrations.—Laura Hunter, Mount Laurel Library, NJ

I have bought several of these books since it has came out 2 for me ( I have a signed one that is put up and than one that is in on my book self) 1 for my mother 1 for my daughter 1 for my niece, when I got the very first book I only bought it because it was one of Chris books and I wanted to make sure that the collection I have of land of stories stays complete, but after I read it with my daughter I knew it was something I would later buy again and I did I got a copy for my daughter., and when I went to one of his book signings I got one for my mother and than bought another one for him to sign. I have all of Chris's books but this is the only book I have more than one copy of. I love this story and I am 37 years old I have bought more copy's of this book than any grown woman should. But once you read it you just want to spread the story to others.

This is a lovely children's book. The story made me tear up, it's so bittersweet. It's an inspiring story for any child who feels a little different or left out. And the artwork is fantastic as always.

My kids love the land of stories books. This one is a short story. My older kids read the chapter books but my 7 year old loves this. It is a fable that has a great moral... especially for kids that are different, need a friend OR someone who is having difficulty accepting others as they are.

This story strikes a careful balance between celebrating what makes you unique and telling kids that they're not alone in the world just because they're different.
The curvy tree survives because he's unique. The loggers don't cut him down because his wood isn't straight enough to build anything out of. But when he grows tall enough to see into other forests, he finds that he's not the only curvy tree in the world. The little girl, who feels alone and friendless in her village because she's different from the other kids, climbs the curvy tree's branches and sees that there are kids like her all over the place, waiting to be her friends.
The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous and the story is well told for a preschool child to understand. It's a wonderful addition to my kids' bookshelf, especially for my son who is a little bit different himself.

A wonderful original story that shows how being different can be a good and that we are not alone in being unique. I loved it and enjoyed sharing it with my family (who asked to hear it over and over again).

I listened to the author read this story. I teach Kindergarten and thought what a beautiful message. I like the illustrations too. My kids really liked the story. We were able to have a authentic discussion about the topic.

My nephew was diagnosed with a genetic condition that makes him feel abnormal. He can’t play like other kids and gets frustrated that he feels left out. This story was the most perfect answer to a situation where we felt helpless to help him. We read it to him and it clicked, it’s okay to be different. Beyond that, nobody is alone in being different. There are dozens of curvy trees out there if you just look. Now he asks me to read this to him every time I see him.

This is one of my son's favorite bed time stories. I love the message that it has. With my son having curly hair like the character it makes it easier for him to relate to.

I bought this book to put in th waiting room of my department at work. The little girl wears glasses. So do most of our patients. It is proving popular so far. The story is gentle and the pictures beautiful. Hope it encourages parents to check out the other TLOS books.
