If you have marginal eyesight or mature eyes, a good magnifier and your reading glasses are required to see what's in this book. Literally. The 'how to' text is 1/16 inch tall with capital letters being nearly 1/8" as you can see in the photo. The templates/ pattern images average 1.5 to 2" with a very few being larger. These small images and the tiny text make for a frustrating read for someone without x-ray vision. I thought the templates would be um, you know, template sized. Hate to say it but it's going back.

I'm a life-long fan of popup books. In the late 1950s, an uncle who had served in Japan brought home some amazing Japanese pop up books and as a pre-schooler, I was hooked! I've loved to read them to my kids as a parent and collect them, to this day, for reading to next generations.
My wife and I both enjoy craft projects, when we have the time, and working with card stock in creating unusual, eye-catching materials is something we enjoy -- and that people who are on the receiving end seem to enjoy as well. That's the background. We have supplies around the house, already, like various kinds of card stock, a complete set of craft knives, cutting boards, etc.
This book, then is a perfect, step-by-step orientation to turning card stock into three-dimensional pop ups, starting with very basic shapes and, by the end of the book, graduating into super-cool constructions. There are other books offered on Amazon claiming to offer the same introduction -- and my wife and I have a couple of the other books, as well. Some are morel colorful than this book. Some seem to be more fun to explore.
But for someone who seriously wants to be producing these ingenious crafts, this is a very solid book. Step by step. Charts you can easily replicate on your own desk or work table. A logical progression of how the effects are generated. If our experience sounds like your expectation, then this is a great choice for you.

I have enjoyed this book. I am new to book making but so many handmade books use interesting folded pages. This book has some really great pages with good instructions as well as diagrams. There is even a supply list of papers for using. Great purchase for me as I like to make paper books and fill with watercolor or calligraphy.

After just a casual reading I was able to apply the techniques to create original works of my own. Well-written instructions and excellent pictures made it easy.
(Note that these techniques are for pop-outs that operate on a hinge of 90 degrees, not pop-*ups* that open 180 degrees.)

I haven't tried to create anything yet, but was hoping for more variety. Mostly squares and
straight lines. If you want something similar to the cover photo, then this is the book for you.

Very small print and not much variety in cut and fold examples. Would not buy it again :-(

This excellent book undertakes to analyze the results of choosing some cutting and folding choices made for 90 degree pop-ups. I found that some of his simpler designs worked better for me than the more complicated ones I have seen elsewhere. Jackson's analyses of the choices of cut and fold options are classic. This book is intended for 90 degree pop-ups, not for 180 degree pop-ups.

The entire series of books from Paul Jackson is absolutely fabulous. The cut and fold techniques for Pup-up designs one is a great example. Pop ups won't have any secrets for you anymore. The bases are told for you to create your own designs. Graphic and products designers and architects are mostly the ones targeted for this book.

Okay, but very very simple
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 5, 2014Verified Purchase
One the plus side, the book is beautifully and simply designed. The emphasis is on clarity and instruction. However, as someone who wanted to broaden their understanding of the medium I have to say that about 75% of the coverage is so simple as to warrant it pointless to me - many of the plans are so similar that they needn't be in.
I've noticed that their are several books in this series which makes me feel like this is a way of making money. If there was a full compendium of these ideas in one bigger book it would make much more sense.
Nevertheless, Paul Jackson is a real leader in paper techniques so if you're really starting off from scratch then you will get some help from this book.

Very clever pop-ups with excellent diagrams and photos. I have already printed greeting cards on several sheets before cutting and folding them as pop-ups.
