With twists at every turn, Linda Sittig does not disappoint. This historical fiction is loosely written about her great grandmother who came to Philadelphia from Ireland determined to be a business woman running her own factory. No small feat in the 1860’s. Ellen Cavanah, the main character, was the one credited for having the idea of blending wool with cotton and then creating a cloth that would stand up to wet weather; not be ‘shoddy’, an inferior wool that was used in the confederate army.
Her wool blend went on to be used for Union soldier’s uniforms and as blankets in hospitals.
Linda Sittig’s novel creates the fictional dream and with the combination of love story and tension on every page one cannot stop reading. I greatly enjoyed this book. I bought the kindle version and didn’t know till the end there was a glossary and table of contents. Somehow I wish that had been explained to me in beginning. But that did not detract from my enjoyment of the book.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves historical fiction, stories of the Civil War or stories of strong women.
Set in 1862 Philadelphia, nineteen year old Ellen Canavan lives her life wanting to fulfill her fathers dream, to be a successful business woman. Being an Irish immigrant and a woman is not making it easier. But she is strong willed and determined to make her dreams come true.
She is fighting against all odds, especially the approval of her skeptical Mother. Like mothers of that era, all she wants is to see her daughter married to a wealthy man. As Ellen travel back and forth from Philadelphia to Savannah Georgia, the civil war is about to start. But even the thought of war won't crush her dreams.
A well written gripping story of a determined woman. Ellen is very likable and strong willed for that era. She has her mind set on being seen, heard and start a prosperous business despite all odds. I also liked that it was based on a true story, that of the authors distant family members.
The setting is true to the times with her struggles and obstacles, which adds more drama to Ellen's story. Those who like Historical fiction (with a strong female lead) should enjoy Cut From Strong Cloth, I highly recommend to all.
