Politics and peril mix in the newest Stone Barrington outing, which features a crucial assist from another familiar Woods’ hero, Santa Fe lawyer Ed Eagle. Stone and his sidekick, Dino, have traveled to Los Angeles, along with Kate Rule Lee, the First Lady–cum–CIA director, who is seeking the presidential nomination on the Democratic ticket. Her competition includes the lascivious vice president and a senator from New Mexico, whom Ed is in town to support. Political maneuvering isn’t the only thing Stone and his friends are facing: someone has sent a death threat via e-mail to the head of Kate’s Secret Service detail, and Ed’s murderous ex-wife, Barbara, is in town, as thirsty for Ed’s blood as ever. Luckily, Stone has his own canny instincts to go on as well as a powerful ally in Billy Burnett, a former CIA operative and enemy of the state for whom Stone secured a pardon. There’s more than enough action and intrigue to keep the pages turning in this exhilarating outing. --Kristine Huntley

This novel was very meandering, the reader might forget what the main topic, idea or plot of the book is, due to the many inconsequential diversions (not subplots). The book seems to have been written too fast to meet a deadline. For example the ending is very sudden, there is no detail motif for the murder's actions or the subsequent actions taken against the murder. Stone Barrington seems to be a cut out of his former self. Barrington flashes his police badge, but it seems he is flashing his Visa or MasterCard. Barrington is still a mover and shaker, but all he does is connect them together. Shouldn't these movers and shakers know each other already? Why would a mover and shaker need to borrow a Gulfstream personal jet from one of Barrington's friends? They could certainly afford to rent one and have their own contacts to do so.
I have read previous Stone Barrington novels before (Stand Up Guy, Unintended Consequences) but this one seems to be lacking in quality. Disappointing.
