The Cutting Edge: The Story of the Beatles’ Hairdresser Who Defined an Era Hardcover – February 27, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
The Beatles' hair changed the world. As their increasingly wild, untamed manes grew, to the horror of parents everywhere, they set off a cultural revolution as the most tangible symbol of the Sixties' psychedelic dream of peace, love and playful rebellion. In the midst of this epochal change was Leslie Cavendish, hairdresser to the Beatles and some of the greatest stars of the music and entertainment industry.
But just how did a fifteen-year-old Jewish school dropout from an undistinguished North London suburb, with no particular artistic talent or showbusiness connections, end up literally at the cutting edge of Sixties' fashion in just four years? His story – honest, always entertaining and inspiring – parallels the meteoric rise of the Beatles themselves, and is no less astounding.

About the Author
Leslie Cavendish was born in East London and grew up in a large Jewish family in Burnt Oak, North London. He was apprenticed to Vidal Sassoon in 1962, becoming a stylist in his own right three years later. He became Paul McCartney's private hairdresser in 1966, and soon began to work on the image of all four Beatles, at the Apple offices and in their recording studios, and was even invited along as a friend and participant on the Magical Mystery Tour. In 1967, he opened his own salon, backed by Apple and the Beatles, at 161 King's Road, Chelsea.
After the official breakup of the Beatles, Leslie closed his salon and ran a clothing boutique in South London, while remaining a freelance hairdresser. In 1978, he entered the family footwear business and remained there until 1998 before moving to Spain. He now works for a major charity but also conducts occasional “VIP Beatles Tours” of London, lectures on the Beatles and Sixties culture, and consults with the Beatles Fan Club. Leslie has two sons and divides his time between Britain and Spain. This is his first book.

I left school at 15 years old, without any artistic qualifications to become a hairdresser. I worked for the iconic “’60s” hair stylist Vidal Sassoon. I counted many of the stars of the day among his clients — including Keith Moon, Bee Gees, Dave Clark Five, James Hunt, Terry Stamp, Jane Asher, James Taylor and so many more — but the jewel in my career’s crown was styling perhaps the four most famous heads of hair in history: The Beatles. In late 1966, through Paul McCartney’s then-girlfriend, Jane Asher who was my client, I met and began cutting McCartney’s hair at his home in St. John’s Wood on a street ironically called Cavendish Avenue. Eventually, I styled the other three Beatles’ as well and became part of their inner circle, attending Beatles Recording Sessions and joining the band on the Magical Mystery Tour. They even tempted him away from Sassoon’s to open his own salon at their Apple Tailoring boutique in London’s King Rd. Leslie was also in the building at 3 Saville Row for that famous Roof Top Concert.
Today Leslie attends many Beatles related events and lectures at Conventions, Universities, TV and radio about fashion, music, and Sixties culture.
To keep the memories alive, he offers exclusive “VIP Beatles Tours”. They take you around the most important Beatles locations in London. Using the many anecdotes of his time with the Beatles, he provides you with an exclusive insight into their lives at that time, and you will hear his own personal stories of the Beatles first-hand

It is easy to imagine how the Beatles must have felt when they gave Leslie Cavendish their trust.
His descriptions of his experiences with the Beatles in their world reveal so much about the writer himself. His uncanny eye for detail is revealed in his anecdotes. And while he is very discreet, the subtlety of his observations defines the richness of his experiences, the love and affection he felt for the Beatles, the honesty and kindness you would expect from a person who was welcomed into the Beatles' world.
At the end of the book, Cavendish describes a warm, joyous, moving reunion with Paul McCartney, the feeling of instant recognition after not seeing one another for decades. A unique and beautiful connection reaffirmed.
