Anyhow, I've looked at a few of these in the same ~$30 price range. This one has very long cables, longer than any other I'd seen, which is a plus if you're going to use them on a big tv. The bass box is small and has the large vent on the side, not the bottom, which many other speaker sets had. I have two places for it, a hard surface and a spot on carpet, so bottom bass port is bad. On many of these there is also no cover or screen on the bottom bass port, just a bare speaker. That's going to get ripped pretty quick if you aren't careful handling it.
This also has adjustable bass. Not found on many 2.1's this size/price, and a volume control on a little pod. The pod has a headphone jack and an aux 3.5mm input. Really handy!
Sound is very good. I'm not an audiophile but I've tinkered with small 3.5mm/bluetooth speakers that went from $12-100 and this sounds by far the best. Good sparkling highs although you're going to need to lower the bass at full volume level. It starts sounding rough until you drop it to below the halfway point.
If you want something to plug your phone/tablet into, replace a bad flat screen tv speaker, or put out great sound-on-the-cheap from your PC, this appears to be the winner. The runner-up was the Creative 2.1 that runs around the same price, $30ish. That has shorter cables, no bass adjust, bass port on the bottom, etc.
The only issue I have with these speakers is they knock over easily. My desk is a living, breathing creature. There are packages and papers and office supplies always being pushed around in all sorts of chaotic ways throughout the course of a day. That's not a problem for me - I've got it down to a science. The speakers, however, disagree. If a piece of paper so much as brushes against one of the speakers, they fall over. I don't have any proof, but I'm absolutely certain one once fell over because I looked at it too hard. And that's why I deduct a star. If these things didn't have the balance of a sorority girl after a Luke Bryan concert they'd be perfect.
The company is also great to work with. I was one month out of their warranty period when the left speaker stopped working. I contacted their support, just trying to get a way to possibly fix the issue. Their representative, Cheryl, had me try a few things and narrowed it down to the subwoofer. She asked for the receipt of purchase (which amazon archives), and the number on the bottom of the subwoofer. Within 1 week, I had a completely new set. Subwoofer, and satellite speakers included.
I am very impressed with not only the quality of the sound a $25 set of speakers produce, but the generosity shown by the company to help a customer. Nothing but good remarks and a great experience.
Thank you CA!
I give 5 stars based on what the product is for the price. It certainly isn't the same quality that a system would be if it were 10x the cost, but it is very nice. I would buy it again if the situation came up and would be open to giving it as a gift.
The system is made up of two side speakers and a subwoofer with a control pad for volume changes and inputs. Everything is corded and each attached cord is plenty long enough to stretch around to different parts of your computer desk.
I purchased this particular system heavily because of the control pad. I keep my speakers behind my computer screen and it is a pain to reach around each time to adjust the volume. With the control pad (which has its own cord,) adjusting the volume is extremely simple, and I barely need to move at all to do so. To change the volume you simply rotate the top piece of the control pad. It takes very little effort to move but still is resistant enough that your volume doesn't get out of control too quickly with a light touch. There is an auxiliary port as well as a microphone port on the side of the pad. Also, the pad emanates a dark blue light in the form of a ring in the center of the top of the pad (about the size of a nickel.)
As far as sound quality goes, the bass was a little hard to get right. It took a few extra minutes to get the right balance for it. Other than that initial extra work, I have had a wonderful experience with this system and I recommend it for others.
My total setup was 10 minutes from box to permanent placement and use.
