From the Author

The cybersecurity community has been meaningful to me for most of my life. Having grown up in the hacker culture of the late 80's and early 90's, it was my emotional home during those awkward teenage years. As a result, the health and growth of this community means everything to me. So when I saw the conflicting messages of organizations who were struggling to find cybersecurity talent and those trying to get into the industry who couldn't find that first role, I knew I had to act.

One result of those efforts is the Cybersecurity Career Guide. With this book, I hope to help those who are seeking their first role in the industry to easily overcome some of the personal hurdles that hold people back. Through sharing research and providing practical exercises, it's my desire to give early career job seekers the knowledge they need to streamline that effort, land that first job, and also be prepared for future success.

A hacker since childhood, Alyssa Miller has a passion for technology and security. She bought her first computer at age 12 and quickly learned to hack modem communications and software. Her career journey began as a software developer which enabled her to pivot into cybersecurity. Beginning as a penetration tester, she has spent the better part of two decades in cybersecurity. Those years have seen her grow as a security leader with experience across a variety of roles.

By the age of thirty, Alyssa was serving in security leadership roles. Running the security testing and vulnerability management program for a Fortune 200 financial services firm, she learned the rewards and challenges of hiring and developing cybersecurity professionals. Later in consulting, she was called upon to build consulting teams from the ground up. Now as an executive leader, she is putting the experience of building teams to work as she builds and leads enterprise cybersecurity programs.

Alyssa is a highly recognized professional in the cyber security industry. She regularly advocates for improving the security community. Alyssa is often called upon to share her research with business and industry audiences through a wide variety of international public speaking engagements, interviews, and other media appearances. She blends a mix of technical expertise and executive presence to bridge the gap that can often form between security practitioners and business leaders.

This book is set up in an easy to read and follow style. The author includes great examples of how to take skills learned outside of tech and how to translate them into skills that will be great for tech. I think this is a must have guide for anyone that's wanting to launch a career into cybersecurity, whether it's your first career or you're transitioning from another job sector. You won't be disappointed with your purchase (at least I wasn't).
