What you won't realize here is most of the positive reviews on this unit are from people who haven't been through a power surge with these CyberPower units or tried to file a claim with their joke of a claims department. Trust me the worst is yet to come. I was in the market for a battery backup with surge protection that was a vertical design and has the ability to be wall-mounted. I also needed coax protection for my cable modem as well which is featured by this unit. What sold me was this unit seemed like it came from a good company and their $125,000 connected equipment protection policy. I will admit that the battery-backup function of this unit seems to work well, but that is all. One day during a thunderstorm my house got hit with a power surge. Several of my breakers on the main panel tripped. Various unprotected equipment was damaged, and I had a TV hooked up to an APC surge protector which also got fried. To my surprise my network equipment hooked up to this Cyberpower Unit was also destroyed. My modem, router, and VOIP router all ceased to function after plugging them back into various working outlets in the house. So I make my attempt to file a claim since it was a weekend the only option I had was to leave a voicemail. Monday night came around and I still received no call back. I call again Tuesday and the claims dept line automatically goes straight to voicemail. I finally get a call back Wednesday and was sent a ten page questionnaire (took an hour to complete) to fill out and ship back the old unit for diagnostics. Guess what? Their $125,000 guarantee doesn't cover the actual replacement cost for your damaged equipment, it only reimburses you for the "used fair market value" so if your $1000 computer for destroyed, their guarantee would probably only pay up $250 at the most.Read more ›

Pros:
Does its job reliably, quietly and correctly.
Power conditioning.
Eco feature really works.
Can tun off the loud alarm.
Has a fan that only runs when needed.
Good tech support.

Cons:
No cross ship exchange for repair.
Needs Windows to set alarm to off.

I've found this model more reliable than the APC RS series. The Eco feature turns off the transformer completely when the power is good and the transformer is not needed. This saves 80 Watts relative to a comparable UPS. It has a fan, but the fan only runs when the power has been out for a few minutes and I'm on battery power, so in normal use it is silent. I had to use Windows under Parallels to set the alarm to off with my Mac. I don't want an annoying alarm when the power is out. I KNOW the power is out. Although it required windows to turn the alarm off, it stays off without Windows. This is a big advantage over UPSs of most brands which have an alarm you can't turn off.

I bought the CyberPower CP1500AVRT/BC1500D UPS (1500VA/900W) about a week ago. I went with the 1500VA/900W model because I have a fairly powerful win xp pro system (Dell XPS 710 Red, Intel QX6700 quadcore chip, 4Gb RAM, 1000W power supply/air-cooled, Dell 2407 24" widescreen monitor, 2 internal hard drives (250Mb and 750Mb), 2 internal CD-RW/DVD-RW drives/burners, an internal multi-slot card reader, USB mouse and keyboard. Attached are the following self-powered USB peripherals: 2 printers, 2 external 500Gb hard drives, and an external DVD-RAM drive/burner. The system is used mainly for graphic design and video processing. Only the Dell XPS 710, the Dell 24" monitor, and 1 external 500GB HP hard drive are connected to the CP UPS. All the other powered devices are connected to different outlets via their own non-ups surge suppressors.

Using a P3 International P4400 Kill A Watt Electricity Usage Monitor, I measured the max draw for the connected computer (configured as described above), monitor, and 1 external hard drive to be 352 watts at power-up/boot-up. According to the included CP PowerPanel software, the system typically idles at between 270-280 watts (between 280-290 watts according to the P3 meter). The PowerPanel software fairly consistently displays 16-18 minutes runtime remaining (at idle) when the battery is 100% charged. Obviously, less power-hungry systems can expect longer run times. The fairly compact unit came fully charged, was very easy to setup, and, so far, seems to work exactly as advertised (although, I haven't had a power interruption to test its true mettle yet).

Got the UPS for my 2.0 GHz DP PowerMac and 20-inch ACD. I was specifically attracted to the automatic voltage regulator feature of this UPS. We have an automatic emergency generator for our house, and during power outages units like the APC Backup Pro 650 would cycle on and off and chirp like crazy. Apparently the line voltage fluctuates too much on generator power. A few days after setting up the Cyberpower UPS, the power went out during an electrical storm and the unit seemed to work flawlessly. One note: I was trying to figure out why no OS X software came with the included CD. After calling the company, I found out that you only need to install the software for Windows PCs. With Macs, all the software controls are built in to OS X. You just plug your components into the UPS, hook up the USB cable, start the computer. On start up, the computer recognized the UPS automatically, and you can set everything (e.g. how many minutes before shut-down, presence of UPS icon on menu bar, etc) through System Preferences. Sweet. Another reason to own a Mac. It just works.
