Why You Need It
When power goes out for even a second it can result in data loss and hardware damage which can shorten equipment life expectancy. This battery backup unit provides sufficient emergency runtime power to allow for safe closure of open files and proper shut down of electronics when an outage occurs. In addition, it safeguards electronics from commonly occurring power surges caused by storms, activity on the power grid, or high-powered equipment turning on and off. Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) stabilizes incoming voltage, preventing chronic problems caused by minor but frequent power fluctuations.
Provides backup power and surge protection for corporate and departmental servers, telecom equipment, VoIP and Internetworking hardware requiring pure sine wave output, and Active PFC power source compatibility. Safeguards valuable documents, image files and connected equipment from loss or damage due to power fluctuations and surges, as well as uncontrolled equipment shutdown caused by power interruptions.
Power Management Software
PowerPanel Business Edition software provides IT professionals with the tools they need to easily monitor and manage their backup power. This advanced software allows users remote access from any network PC with a web browser to instantly access vital UPS battery conditions, load levels, and runtime information as well as provide graceful unattended shut down of network computers and virtual machines connected to a battery backup during a power event. Power alerts can be set up to send notifications though email, text, or instant message.

What 500VA protects for me:
-TrippLite Surge protector
-24 Port switch
-5 Port POE Switch
-2 RPi 2/3 Models
This is a lot of stuff to provide power to, so some stuff once a little reconfigured will only be powered to the surge and not the backup, so I should see an increase in back up time allowed.
These things look nice. They can have a network card installed (125.00) if desired. We didn't do that! (At least NOT YET!)
(4) Battery Outlets (2) Surge ONLY Outlets
90 Minutes of run time for client infrastructure. Yes, 90 minutes;
(1) Cisco Small Business 24 Port 10/100/1000 network switch.
(1) Cisco Small Business SSL Router
(1) Comcast Small Business Router
(1) ZyWall Wireless N Access Point
(1) CyperPower CPS-1215RMS Rackmount Surge protector.
***Connected the Comcast voice modem to the surge outlet on the unit.
***Connected the network switch directly to the UPS.
***Connected the Modem, Router and Wireless AP to the Surge strip. This way anyone can power off the power strip to reset the Internet connection BUT NOT lose connections to the "server."
Power button has a cover- NICE so someone has to try hard to power off :)
LCD Display is nice so you can see what's going on with the unit. CyperPower's website has quite a lot of information on the unit.
Perfect for a single server with thick client.
Update: at 53 min it beeps to warn you it's getting tired. The entire time the LED is counting down batt. life. Satisfied with that, didn't want to actually watch it shut down. THe software tells your computer that it's shutting down and backs everything up....pretty cool. Plugged it back in. Just that simple...makes short buzzing noise switching over, but screens don't even flicker.
Update: It is now Jul. 2014....and this thing still hasn't missed a beat. Through countless short power failures. After a couple of long ones....my stuff wakes up exactly where it was.
Unfortunately, after only a few months (and no notable power outages beyond the occasional lights flickering during a bad storm), it's not holding nearly the charge it did a few months ago. Tested and found it quoting less than half the runtime it should have under the load.
