4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use and capable editor but contains annoying ads
Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2020
I've used several versions of PowerDirector over the years.  I've always found it to be among the easier to use and more reliable options among commercially available video editors.  PowerDirector 19 Ultimate has the same very capable yet easy to use functionality.   Installation was easy and a second disk containing bonus content liek extra effects and fonts is included.
PowerDirector offers four different work environments when launched:

⦁ Full mode is the traditional timeline interface. Tools and features are easy to find thanks to the nested preview and effects room windows but it also makes the top of the layout feel a bit cluttered compared to other editors

⦁ Storyboard mode has the same layout and windows along the top but has storyboards instead of a timeline at th bottom.

⦁ Slideshow creator and magic movie (AKA auto) modes both have the same simple layout which is useful for quickly creating projects with minimal frills and fuss.

PowerDirector has just about every bell and whistle home filmmakers need and quite a few they don't and likely never will. One useful feature is screen recording. It allows live recording of the screen as well as applications, games and input devices. Screen recording has always been one of the most powerful yet understated features of PowerDirector. PowerDirector runs reasonably well on older or lower spec systems but slowdown is noticeable when working with 4K files on these systems.  On my test system equipped with a 2.8GHz i7 CPU, 8GB RAM, Nvidia Quadro 1000M and 500GB SSD, slowdown is very noticeable when previewing and rendering 4K video.  I'm able to use my PC while it renders but it's pretty sluggish. Rendering times are about what I expected, meaning neither great nor bad. Granted, this test system is old as dirt but I prefer testing on older or lower spec'd systems.  There is no shortage of reviews perfomed on beefier spec'd systems.  In the real world, this program is far more likely to be installed on a system closer to the specs of my test system than a system with an i9 CPU, 64GB of RAM and an RTX 3090 graphics card.

I like this newest version of PowerDirector and all that it offers.  I didn't go over every spec and feature because they can all be easily found on Cyberlink's website.  The one thing I dislike most about PowerDirector 19 are the ads.  This is nothing new for Cyberlink products and PD19 continues the tradition of feeling like a marketing gateway for other products, particularly PowerDirector 365.  On first launch a link popped up stating that I didn't have the latest version of PowerDirector and to click the link to get all the missing features. I assumed 5e link led to an update but was instead dropped onto a web page with an offer to purchase PowerDirector 365.  The page also had an extensive list of features missing from PowerDirector 19 that could be found in PowerDirector 365. I attached the list to this review.  Although most of the features seem like extra fluff, there are a few that I feel should be in every version and not held out for the more expensive subscription based version. There are also flashing ads thrown in my face while performing certain tasks like rendering.  The whole marketing blitz aspect of Cyberlink software cheapens the feel of the products and makes them feel more like ad loaded shareware rather than a legitimate retail program.
