Cybersexism: Sex, Gender and Power on the Internet Kindle Ausgabe
It's a tough time to be a woman on the internet. Over the past two generations, the political map of human relations has been redrawn by feminism and by changes in technology. Together theypose questions about the nature and organisation of society that are deeply challenging to those in power, and in both cases, the backlash is on. In this brave new world, old-style sexism is making itself felt in new and frightening ways.
In Cybersexism, Laurie Penny goes to the dark heart of the matter and asks why threats of rape and violence are being used to try to silence female voices, analyses the structure of online misogyny, and makes a case for real freedom of speech – for everyone.
Laurie Penny's forthcoming book, Unspeakable Things: Sex, Lies and Revolution, will be published in 2014.

Bewertet in den USA am27. September 2013I rate this book five stars despite disagreeing with the author's reading of the film The Social Network, despite its relatively poor volulme-to-price ratio, and despite its somewhat herky-jerky tone.
Cybersexism is but a preview of an upcoming larger collection of essays by Laurie Penny, and one I'd gladly shell out for again. Penny is a passionate, witty and confrontational writer whose militant language doesn't quite conceal a genuine care for everyone on the gender spectrum. Yes, even those old foes of Tumblr: the white, hetero, able-bodied, cis male!
I rate this book five stars because I basically feel this should be a manifesto for all those who venture into online spaces, to get just a small taste of what it's like to be on the other side of "pics or gtfo". Its small volume may have left me eager for more, but its punchy, witty style makes it ideal introductory reading for the tech-inclined feminist.
One may sneer and say my praise comes from being on the same side of the political spectrum as the author, but if the basic message is "women/girls/lgbtq's deserve equality, representation and a feeling of safety", that surely transcends all political affiliations?

Bewertet in den USA am16. Oktober 2014I have come across very few authors who's writing is so uninhibited and raw. This book reminds me of Nivedita Menon's Seeing Like A Feminist. It's an honest and pure detailing of gender based exploitation that goes on in the World Wide Web. Internet has become an inseparable part of our lives and so has this harassment and exploitation which feels very normal. It's a must read for every internet junkie and net naives- actually it should be a textbook. Loved every word start to finish.

Bewertet in den USA am25. August 2013It is hard to understand what I am not. To experience someone else's point of reference. This work does an excellent job of detailing how online misogyny has affected the author and other women, and, more importantly, takes the time to explain the reasons, which perhaps should be obvious, why these things are so destructive.
As I read her explanation of being a female geek in school, my initial reaction was to think, but that was not my experience. There were no geek girls interested in me. Therefore, my social alienation was different. However, I took some time to cast back through my mind, and there were many girls in my age group whom I never considered. I have/do desire the objectified female archetype and would, at one point in my life, have pursued such women as my prize for being successful.
Laurie Penny's message that we risk turning the online world into a horrible simulacra of our violently segregated meatspace is, by far, the most important and well articulated message in this work.
Take the time to read it.

Bewertet in den USA am21. September 2013I've been a fan of Penny's for several years, and her experiences with cybersexism led me to expect a different sort of book - I have a great deal of respect for Penny's analytical and writing skills, and found the analysis to be somewhat lacking in Cybersexism. It felt as though the problems were laid out, and no further thought was given to what strategies could be put in place for improving the current situation. Although Penny's writing was characteristically engaging and deft, Cybersexism seemed to end abruptly, with no work done towards addressing any of the issues raised by the experiences of women and girls online apart from acknowledging their existence.

Bewertet in den USA am28. August 2013In this brief but captivating ebook, Laurie Penny has perfectly captured the experience of a generation of women writers on the Internet. I cried. Twice. Whether she's talking about coming of age on Livejournal, the joys of cybersex, or the very real threats and harassment women face when we speak out in the digital public sphere, her politics are right on and her writing is lively and vibrant. I should note that, except for what appears to be one missed editorial note, the book is impeccably edited, a too-rare joy in the ebook age. This is a must-read.

Bewertet in den USA am31. Januar 2014This book about the prevalence of culturally-supported misogyny and harassment over the internet is a must-read, especially for that person in your life who doesn't have to think about this issue too much (not going to name names, but you know who I mean).
Laurie Penny does a wonderful job dissecting the issue, weaving it with personal anecdotes. Some reviewers complained it was too short, but I thought the length was perfect (hey, 'it's-too-short' people: don't worry, I'm sure the trolls will give her more to write about!)
Worth the price of admission. Don't miss this one!

Bewertet in den USA am13. Juli 2014Reread this while waiting for the U.S. kindle edition of "Unspeakable things" to become available.
In the aftermath of #yesallwomen and the Facebook emotional adjustment experiment, the message in the book rings even more true and cognizant. The "rules" and the tools of the internet have an impact on its use. And that impact isn't all sugar and spice.
So if you feel like starting a journey of reflection and learning, Penny might just be the guide you are looking for. Like the author bio says; she is a nerd and a nomad.

Bewertet in den USA am11. Dezember 2014Absolutely loved this book. I have been following a lot of GamerGate discussion and picked up a reference to this book along the way. Its deplorable how women are treated in general but this was very eye opening to see just how insidious and prevalent the threats and bullying are. Made my teenage son start reading it as soon as I was done as a guide of what not to do on the Internet.

I love how Laurie Penny, even though sometimes I don't share her opinions she's very argumentative and always makes a point.
Easy to read, but very interesting indeed. If you're interested in this topic I think it's a must.

SkiamakhosBewertet in Großbritannien am 20. September 20135,0 von 5 Sternen Brilliant
OK, I'll start right out by saying I am a HUGE fan of Laurie Penny. Her writing in New Statesman, the Guardian & the Independent has genuinely changed my worldview over the couple of years that I've followed her. I'm giving this 5 stars though not because of that but because of a number of things she says regarding privacy online, regarding sex online & issues about pseudonymity & writing. I love Laurie's writing style, too - her passion for the subject shines out, so that as I'm reading this I'm going "Yes, that's true. Yes... Yes! Fantastic!" grooving on it like Kerouac's Carlo Marx reading Dean Moriarty's writings in "On the Road". There are things in this book that will have you grinning like an idiot with recognition and sympathetic agreement, and things in here that will make you RAGE too. If you want to read some gutsy, impassioned polemic with a sound solid basis in fact, this is a great little book.

TinaP-JBewertet in Großbritannien am 24. Oktober 20134,0 von 5 Sternen Cyberfeminism for beginners AND experts
This book is in fact a chapter from Ms Penny's upcoming publication which I believe is due out next year. It is a timely look at the misogyny rampant on the internet and the virulent gender-based hatred that is directed towards women who dare to have an opinion and express it. It is not only about that, however, and details the positive effects the internet is having on feminism, empowerment and the ongoing fight for intersectional equality. Great as an introduction but also as a publication for those of us who may have had more than a toe dipped in the feminist world!
I await the full book with baited breath.

AngelBewertet in Großbritannien am 20. Juli 20145,0 von 5 Sternen Engaging and essential.
As with everything by Laurie Penny this is a clearly-written and easily understood book, but which engages the reader and deals with themes the misogynists and right-wing haters don't want you to read.
