The Cybex Aton 2 Infant Car Seat integrates innovative safety features with an extremely lightweight and roomy seat. It features Linear Side-Impact Protection that provides 40% additional safety in the event of a side-impact collision.
Just had a big car accident yesterday, front impact with car traveling in opposite direction. my car was totaled. I had some bruises and my wife too. The baby did not receive a single scratch. Definitively would recommend this car seat. After the accident the plastic parts show the stress they were exposed to, the seat did a great job.
This is an amazing car seat.... if you can afford it. What makes this seat so amazing in my opinion? Safety safety safety.
As a police officer I have seen my fair share of car seats and this one offers safety features well beyond those of the American competition (Graco, Safety 1st, Britax). While their car seats are nice, the safety features of the Cybex Aton far outweigh the price difference. The Cybex offers an innovative "load leg" which in the event of a serious front end or rear end collision absorbs and distributes the force towards the floor of the vehicle. What does that mean? It means THAT force is not being absorbed by your precious baby's neck and spine. Additionally it prevents the car seat from rotating forward and thus keeps your child in the proper position in the event of a collision.
As most parents who have car seats know, it is nearly impossible to comfortably secure a car seat in the middle of the rear seat if you drive a sedan (plus the LATCH system is generally not located in the center seat of sedans) LATCH stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children and it features a place to anchor your car seat to the welded metal frame of your vehicle. There just isn't room for the driver and front passenger seat once you give the proper spacing to the car seat. If like me, you plan on positioning the car seat in the left or right rear passenger seat THIS car seat offers something called linear side impact protection. There is a little bar that flips up on the door side of the car seat which in the event there is a serious side impact collision (on the car seat side of the car). The LSP bar makes contact with the side of the car and again absorbs and distributes the energy to protect your baby.
And lastly while it does not pertain to the collision safety features I love that the canopy is rated a 50spf. My children are very fair skinned, light haired babies. They seem to find the sun on cloudy days. The canopy protects my children from absorbing too much sun on long car rides!
For moms and dads with sore backs the lightweight design of the car seat is a blessing. Especially since my children are chunky monkeys and carrying a child in a heavy car seat is just no fun! I feel like this 8.5lb seat has got to be at least 50% lighter than any of the other car seats I have ever used. Not so much an issue when baby comes home from the hospital but definitely an issue when your kid starts pushing 20+ pounds.
Other pros: Material seems soft and comfortable for my child. Also easy to clean Well padded with additional infant pad insert for proper seating Easy strap adjustment on the 5pt harness to keep up with child's growth Quick latch system on base Easy to adjust base angle with multi-setting base foot (plus easy to read built in level for proper angle) Compact base
The only thing I disliked about this car seat was the initial confusing setup. I blame this on myself because several of the safety features are so unlike anything I have ever seen before I really had to take the time to learn about them so I could use the car seat properly. Once you figure out and install the base there is really no reason to remove it or adjust it very often as long as you purchase additional bases for additional vehicles.
Wonderful seat. I love the safety feature of the load leg, the lightness of the carrier, and the newborn insert. The only feature I would like to see in a future model is a one handed adjustment of the handle. As it is currently, you need to reach over the seat and simultaneously release the handle catches on both sides (this makes it slightly awkward trying to get our newborn into/out of the seat when it is already in the car).
Other then that, I love this seat and would buy it again.
After purchasing a few other infant car seats, I noticed that even with our mid-size SUV (Lexus RX350), the seats were a very tight fit even after having the passenger seat almost all the way up. Figured there had to a be a solution. Did quite a bit of searching and came across the Cybex Aton 2. Saw some videos showing that it's very ergonomic in that it curves in the back a little more than the others and the outer shell is slightly shorter. Figured why not give it a shot. Turned out to be the best car seat we've purchased yet and the dimensions were a BIG BONUS! I was able to move the passenger seat back to its normal position WITH room to go, about 5" or so.
As with all other German products, built VERY sturdy and the great features it has are far too many for me to list in detail in this review, but I will say my favorite are the 1) stand that comes out from the seat base to give extra support in the vehicle. It pushes down against the floor to keep it in place even more than the belt clips or seatbelt that holds it in...2) lighter than other car seats....3) handle has multiple angles to carry so that you can adjust it the way you want. Other seats like the Maxi Cosi felt as if I was carrying my child at an angle, where as this one gave me options.
I really wanted to love this carseat and we ended up going with it because it was supposedly light. We had a chicco keyfit for our first child and loved it. We now live 2 flights up and thought this would be lighter. Somehow the design of it I actually find more difficult to carry than the Chicco and it is MUCH MORE difficult to use. So hard to clip in and take out, hard to move the handle back and very awkward to take the baby out.
Not to mention my kid sweats profusely in this thing, even after just a few minutes his whole back is wet and we keep the car cool with AC. It is so uncomfortable for him he hates being in the car. Very disappointed as this was well reviewed.
We love these car seats, they are small and have all the safety features and then some! I got the Aton a few years ago because it could fit in the back of my Mazda 3 with two other car seats. Now I have then in my minivan and they fit securely with the latch and with a seatbelt installation. The European belt path makes another base unnecessary. It securely buckles into a car with just the carrier easily and correctly every time.
